That's a good point I admittedly didn't think of.
Since I would be trickle charging the batteries from my home power when I have to switch over to generator power the trickle charger would continue to charge from the gen's power.
Would a 2.5 amp charger be a good size to use? Too big or too...
I would agree. I guess I am thinking more along the lines of backup power to a home. If the power is off at your house then the only power available to run a charger on the Batteries would be from the convenience outlets on the front of the Generator. I don't see why this wouldn't work to...
Just curious if the culprit to this problem was ever discovered? I recently got my first 701a and I am not sure my charging circuit is working. The only test I have performed so far was to test the voltage at the battery and the voltage did not increase much above 25.7.
What was the...
Thanks Lloyd and Isaac, since both of you are pointing at the voltage reg and/or Q2 transistor I will definitely look into getting a spare.
Just like On my old 1977 dodge I have spare parts that are prone to failure and "can be" hard to find in a pinch (such as voltage reg and ECU). I have...
Yeah I figured I would get spare filters and oil but I'll have to read over the TM to figure out what you mean by Q2 though. Is the Q2 part of the AC voltage reg or is Q2 the actual voltage reg.
I assume eBay is the preferred most likely source to find these parts?
Without having complete doubles of every part on the MEP701a/016b generator (Onan engine) are there certain problematic parts that you would recommend that I should probably begin now to find/buy/have on hand?
I would hate to have to look for them in a rush.
Thanks for the tips in advance.
I did hook up a solargizer to the batteries now that they are fully charged. I assume that will maintain them but I have also heard conflicting info that the solargizer doesn't actual charge....only maintains??
I will let the system sit for a weak and try that. When I bought it from the guy we actually started it up twice with no trouble but I don't know how much he started it trying to show it of to other sellers. Maybe all of the short starts and no long runs wore the batteries down.
After I...
Hey PeterD,
I took your advice and monitored Voltage while cranking it. After a 30sec preheat it dipped down to 24.2v but never went lower than that.
During the 1-2 cranking the voltage dipped down to 19.5v and then after starting it recovered above 25v in a matter of 4-5seconds.
What do you...
Took 4.5hrs to charge one batt and 2hrs to charge the other. In the end I got up to 25.5v and she fired right up.
Truthfully I think a gas engine would have cranked over and started at 50-60% charge.
Well I learnt some more about diesel's need for an almost full battery.
Thanks all for...
Yup, according to that link it looks like my batteries are about 50-60% full. That's only a drop of about 0.5v per battery. I forgot how little voltage has to drop for a battery to approach dead. Was thinking anything over 12v each was good. Oh how soon I forget. :X
Thanks for the...
Really? 24.6v isn't fully charged? 25.4v sounds like a charging voltage reading. I will try your advice tho and charge them..,.i haven't been batting 1000 the last few weeks on my automotive diagnosis. So I'll try it.
What should the charging voltage read when this gen is charging the...
Yeah the basics are always the best. Connections at the battery are clean and new except for a messy splice near battery terminal but appears solid. I will be replacing that also
