You will have to make it wider with a second pair of tubes and braces if you want to swap front to rear - at least on the 1008 etc. not sure about the 1009. Spacing is different.
since the OP has a M1008 - try this link (M1031 with a standard M1008 box) http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?128432-The-best-receiver-hitch-for-M1028&p=1610303&viewfull=1#post1610303
Put a Class five 2" receiver hitch on my M1031.
I used a Reese Towpower 51016, no cutouts needed. Although I did do a small reduction in the depth of the hitch side panel to increase clearance. I also moved the hitch crossbar slightly forward so the 1/2" pin holes lined up with the pintle...
I used the overload spring from a K3500 and cut it down with a waterjet to the same length as the existing one, zero rates and a bunch of the shims used between springs on many GM trucks (but not ours) and ended up with almost 4". I also added the 3-leaf medium duty helper spring (instead of the...

Truck is a long way from...
Anyone have tips on how to remove/replace the rear springs on a 1008/1028? Specifically how to access the nut on the forward end of the spring?
The rest is easy... except for how to lift the new springpacks up by myself (9+K3500 overload+zerorate with K3500 3 leaf helper = almost 180#)...
And how it is measured (with sides up, including drawbar etc etc) which is why I was hoping someone who had one could measure it... but there might still be manufacturer differences so I guess the manufacturers name also would be useful...
