Just looking out the window at my 802 sitting in the snow...thinking about coolant.
How the heck does the mil add coolant to these things? Does it really require a funnel? Somehow, I can't see an isolated post being screwed because they don't have a funnel on the machine.
Not necessarily, I have some diesel gensets at work that are in very dry environments and still have grey exhaust manifolds after several hundred load hours.
Unpainted, heated cast iron will rust fast around moisture, like outdoor, but I've seen newer ones coming painted, and much higher hours...
I don't know... I had bought two panels for two generators, and had an intern go through them. Both had the same behavior. I bought the same ones for home, but have not taken them out of the box yet. I'll find out soon I guess.
Aside from the exhaust manifold, that unit is *clean*. Did I mention the exhaust manifold really bothers me and looks like more hours, though? If the hours are accurate, $4k is certainly on the high side, but probably worthwhile if you never buy another genny again.
But I also think $4000 is...
How big is the panel? I bought a few fairly large 12v panels and controller for trailer-mounted commercial generators I have at work, and they're terrible. I'm lucky if they put out over 13v in full sun, forget any shade.
I've been wondering how well the little tiny solargizer the military uses...
For sure, but my company has to have 100% uptime at this site, and my neighbor is some kind of specialized surgeon, I don't think he cares what it costs... But it went in when propane was $1 per gallon. Just like our old meps were built when diesel was $.50 per gallon...days we'll never know again.
Diesel starts to degrade the moment it leaves the refinery. It will not evaporate away like gasoline, but it doesn't last forever. Diesel sitting in a tank for ten years will not burn as efficiently as diesel that was trucked out of the refinery a week ago. Though who knows with the...
That is a nice looking unit. Looks brand new aside from the exhaust manifold. The color and sheen of the manifold bothers me. Like it was clear-coated or soaked in petroleum to make everything look better.
$4000 is probably an appropriate price if it carries load.
I meant to answer this and forgot...
I've also run my MEP-802 on 5 gallons for a day. I think I ran my 002 during hurricane Sandy on even less, and it had a fuel leak then.
Agreed, online units are not priced for average consumers to use all over the home. But a standby will generally be good enough to come online with a significant voltage drop or frequency deviation.
While it's not painfully difficult to separate our 12v batteries and charge them individually, wouldn't it be nice to leave them in the generator and just plug in a charger to maintain them when not running?
Most 24v chargers are an arm and a leg. But, the ones designed for motorized...
Good info. I went and bought 25' of appropriate fuel hose at a hydraulic shop, and re-used several fittings for my 002 and 018. They turn out to be fairly easy to disassemble and reassemble, but I haven't done it in a year or so, and forget now.
I also bought a bag of 50 from an online...
That was my thinking. Anything you're going to run on generator that's sensitive should be on a ups to clean the power and control shutdowns. If you run out of fuel in the middle of the night or have some other issue that causes an engine stall (overheat, oil pres sender failure, etc), voltage...
Well that complicates it... It can't be that better at handling heat, though. I tried annealing it with the same torch I use for copper plumbing, and melted two of them...
