I was going to mount this 20,000 lbs. on my M35A3 but changed my mind, too much trouble with the hydraulic system. I got one of these 24 volt, it will be easy now.
Rockwell changed their symbol to the twin rivers around 1973, becomes Meritor in 1997 and them Arvin Meritor in 2000 and then Axletech in late 2002. The LMTV- M1078 and the FMTV- M1083 did their feild trials in 1992 and failed, the big brass said we need a stop gap truck and in 1993 the M35a3...
The LMTV's came with a (3.90) 7.80 final drive axle. There are many other FMTV's that use the same axle with a (3.07) 6.14 final drive axle. All you need to do is change the chunk assembly with a 3.07 chunk. I have been working with these axles for 14 years.
Yes i mounted the 14.00 x 20 on the A3 rims with the rubber bead lock. I have over 6,000 miles now on the 14.00's. I balanced my tires, you can balance (stand it up) a nickel on the dash at 60 mph.
Hey buddy, i sure wanted to go but wife and daughters were going to hang me if i did not go to my birthday party that saturday. I would much rather have someone riding with me on the road and on the trails.
The two major things that breaks axles are torque and tire size. Rockwell has a max. GVW rating of 12,000 lbs ea. axle. This 6v92 needs to be installed in a 5 ton.
