Although NOT a CUCV, it is what's left of a military base fire truck that I converted to a dump truck. Old school, works fine, Manual transmission and 12 volt but with the 6.2 diesel and 4:56s. Works great plowing.
Picked this up yesterday. Not many left in this condition in the Northeast at least. University of Maryland farm Truck. Pretty rust free M1028, all original, lots of dirt but runs and drives. Don't think it ever went out on the road, was used for hauling water tanks. Spring semi- restoration...
My two cents. Hillbilly's price of $225 is pretty reasonable since it INCLUDES the starter (doesn't need a core). Why not get yours rebuilt. Wouldn't even think of using the Chicom starters, not worth the effort. Also use NEW starter bolts, GM (easy to find) and torque properly.
This helps too, especially if the truck was sitting for a while.
Check for damaged or loose vacuum hoses. Remove, clean, and inspect vacuum
modulator assembly and modulator valve
M1008 and M1010 front axledifferentials have thrustwashers at side gears. M1028,M1028A1, and M1031 haveclutch packs. If disassembling M1008 orM1010 front axle differential, perform steps 1-6.

Nice truck but its not a CUCV. I have an 86 K30 C&C that started out as a US Army base Fire Truck. I Converted to a Dump. Neat Chevy similar to a CUCV but NOT one.
Lined up all 4 running CUCVs and the K30 dump for a group shot. K30 dump is ex Military also, started life as a base fire truck. Garage still full though! Happy Memorial Day.
