Take a look at post 8 and run a straight line between the input and output shaft. The center shaft is almost in line and when the output is stopped, it makes the center (gear) try to climb the input gear, forcing the case apart. While I don't know for a fact, I'll bet that the T-138 is not as...
I understand the size issue...that's why I'm working on an M35A3. I like the Cat and have learned a lot about the tranny...... but still the slow speed is my nemesis. If I hit the lottery, I'll change gears AND put air lockers in both ends. The 50/50 split brake made the A3 my choice to modify.
Got it. I didn't know the front engaged at any time it is put in low. Therefor there are two air valves in parallel and by trimming it, the TC front will no longer activate by the one that hits the washer. So capping the air line and removing the valve is also an option, it still works...
I'm not sure I know what you mean about a washer. I really have not gotten into the A2 that far....thank GOD.
From my understanding, which is limited to disassembly and reassembly of the T-138 out of my M817 (not a T1138), the center gear shaft wedges at a low angle (even lower in the...
I find that having a dump (929A2) that I cannot use low reverse....sucks. My first dump, an M817, had problems caused by the military forgetting to set the shaft(s) bearings on a new T138, but once I had it right, it performed flawlessly. I should not have gotten rid of that truck. Now I'm on...
All of the vendors want retail prices....which about 99% of the time is too rich for my blood. I have never done business with Midwest. I enjoy the build and working out problems, so paying someone to do it is not in my budget. I see prices well into the 20's for what you describe.
A 5 ton...
Try C & C in Unionville Indiana...they do quality work. You might put an ad in "wanted vehicles". There was a partly completed one (crew cab) that would have been a great start ....sold.
When I look at the front of your trailer I see a big white wall and a tool box. Why not make a frame to hold the spare and put the box on top of it.
It looks like you are committed to under, but that front area looks easy to access and the spare is not too large.
I would not change out the axle and I would stay with the surge brakes. You can use different rims, like the normal 8 lug Ford 3/4 ton van wheels and tires. Then if that is not low enough, there are several threads about taking 4" out from the frame-axle connection.
I do believe there are...
I watched a Jay Leno show about his 6x6 Power Wagon repower with 4BT. The above would be a great candidate for modern drive gear and sell the OEM stuff.
I bought a V6 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi 3800 with supercharger that would fit nicely (yea, I know it's and old thread, just thinking).
It is a good looking truck and relatively rust free. I cannot see it being 190 in those photo's...does not look worn out. I can't venture a guess on price. It would seem to be a good candidate for a restoration. Parts are still available, I believe. Is it in an auction?
How big will the wife or local zoning let you have? Google "bobbed deuce" and see if that is your style. Myself, I like 4x4 and not dragging the extra axle....or buying tires for it. And on the deuce, air lockers with 395 tires is cool.
The budd rim is like this;

The bolt holes look different on the ones you have pictured. The first appears to be hub pilot and the second stud pilot. I don't know about their...
