The system is "failsafe" so with the switch open or the wire disconnected the fan runs, it shuts off when the switch closes or you short the two leads together.
Yes, there are timing marks on the harmonic balancer, the pointer is on the drivers side below the PS pump.
It is always a good idea to bar an engine over in its normal direction which is clockwise standing in front of the truck looking at the harmonic balancer

Any time you are doing electrical work where you are going from off to run repeatedly you should disconnect the TSU or you can burn up the glow plugs.
Any time the TSU is plugged in and you turn the run switch to off you MUST wait at least 90 second before going back to run.

If you disconnect the batteries you will erase the codes, you would need to drive it again enough to cause it to go into limp mode and then try again without disconnecting the batteries.
It may be advantageous to source another OM617
With a pump mod and a good Holset turbo I should see around 170HP which would be enough.
The OM617 will do 230HP with a 7.5mm IP, 7CM Holset turbo and an intercooler but an otherwise stock engine.
One would need to be careful though with a drive...
