It looks like synthetic rope has been neglected here. Nice and easy to handle and really strong, but not cheap! If you're looking to avoid reeling out a ton of winch cable it is the way to fly. If you're tugging somebody out you want the recovery strap as mentioned previously. Synthetic rope...
I found that the window likes to catch a bit on the weather stripping at the top. I found it easiest to get a couple pieces of 24ga sheet metal (for furnace duct work) and use those as a guide to let the window get past the seal.
Saturn surplus has the clips if they aren't sitting in the...
Since there's not much comment on the H1, I'll throw in my 2cents.
I keep my deuce parked in a meadow on my property at about 7,200 feet in Colorado. The meadow is pretty flat, but gets a fair amount of snow. This winter I went to pull out and was having trouble in 10" of snow, but no weight...
I had the fun of recovering a 2000-ish pound RV from where I busted the axle up on a mountain during hunting season, miles & miles from anywhere. We we able to cobble together a log as a skid to get it off the road and into a meadow, so at least I wasn't blocking the road overnight.
What we...
I had the same thing on mine when I picked it up: most of the driver's side loose, most of the passenger side were not. My drive shaft bolts were all tight I was glad to note. But when I had them off to test the speedo I did use some blue lock-tite upon re-assembly. I just love that stuff in...
I just had time to do a quick search of radio shack. Turns out they have a fixed regulator that would do what you need:
+12V Fixed-Voltage Regulator 7812 - RadioShack.com
For 200mA you shouldn't need to heat sink it, just connect 24V to one leg, ground to another and your gauge to the third...
A voltage regulator IC might be the solution, but if you don't like the more complicated electronics you probably won't like it much. They are typically 3 connection devices, but you have to do some additional circuitry to setup the output voltage.
page 8 figure 2 of the pdf below shows what...
75mA is 0.075 Amps. Once upon a time I used to work electronics, before I decided that being zapped by 6,000 VDC wasn't fun anymore (I had a 'discussion' with the engineer who wrote the test procedure on that one!)
Putting two 12V bulbs in series is fine so long as they are the same size bulb...
more synthetic thoughts
I wanted to share my thoughts/experience with synthetic winch rope.
Additional cons:
low abrasion resistance (i.e. dragging logs)
heat sensitive (most electric winches use a brake to prevent out-feed, which heats the drum. So when you power out you are working...
It might be as simple as a loose connection on the battery terminals. With the amazing amount of current flowing during cranking it doesn't take much resistance to cause problems. I had a system that did exactly that a few years ago, just a little amount of resistance on the terminal and as I...
I apologize for dredging up this old thread, but Mark hit on exactly what I just discovered on my deuce, no speedo, but worked off the drill. So I disconnected the drive lines so I could fiddle with it by myself in the barn. And sure enough in reverse the speedo indicated, but in forward gears...
Back when I worked as a plumber doing hot water heat systems we used a thing called a diversion T. Basically it was a T with a restriction to force some of the hot water to flow on the main path and some for the T'd path.
Here are a couple examples:
monoflow T
venturi T
Note you could do the...
I had to start from scratch on my headlights also, I was even missing the bucket on one side. I decided that since I needed all the bits I'd spend a bit more and go with the Hella H4 conversion from rallylights.com (no affiliation) I haven't had it on the road in the dark yet, but they are...
I just did windshield glass a few days ago, $70 ($20/sqft).
My requirements were pretty loose for my first MV (acquired a couple months ago), it just had to be drivable. That's what I got, able to drive it home, but missing a Lot of bits, but I factored that into the cost and offered...
I think I just searched on diesel heater and maybe added 24 volt. I also seem to recall that I told it to search in the description as well as the title.
The heater is fed off of the main tank. I chose to run its own pump to avoid the possibility of introducing new sources of air leaks into the injection pump's fuel path, but I have read other people's installs that used the main fuel supply line.
The diesel exhaust is vented separately from...
Being in the frozen north, you might want to consider a diesel fired heater versus the hot water heater. From what I've read here (being a noob myself) they crank out a Lot more heat, and it is instant, no need to wait for the engine to warm up. I picked one up used on eBay a few weeks ago for...
Thanks to all for the welcome!
srodocker: It was $2,000, which seems fairly reasonable as the parts should run me around $1,000 depending on my scrounging/fabricating skills. I'm tempted to see what I can whip up with some aluminum or stainless steel welding for the passenger windshield...
Count me as another new guy to the old iron addiction! I got my 1971 deuce home today, just a 25 mile drive from a local private seller. I checked it out last weekend and made arrangements to go get it this weekend before the weather gets cold permanently (Colorado is having a heat wave, 55...
Hi Gents,
I've been thinking about a deuce for quite a while now and have come across one for sale privately locally that I'm going to take a look at. It is missing some bits (windows, headlights, & more I'm sure when I check it out) but the guy says it runs & drives fine...
I got to...
