Ongoing Log Of My 1987 HMMWV

I don't think I could bring myself to recommend replacing a rear main seal that is NOT leaking...no matter how convenient. Just let the miracle happen.

A local guy just got a kit from Breton and reported that it fit well and he was really happy with it.

    Driving Techniques

This video shows soldiers being trained how to do it. It is used when one or both corners are in the air. The major reason people snap half shafts is from letting the tire in the air get spinning and then JAM on the brakes. The inboard brake rotor stops instantly but that huge tire/runflat...

    Winch mount problem

Start by taking off the block off plates on the end of the frame. See whats in there. Don't the mounting feet of the winch line up with those holes on the winch plate?

M998 drivetrain issues please help !

My first thought with drivetrain noise that is affected by letting off the throttle would be U-joints/center bearing. Mine had a ringing squeak that matched driveshaft speed under a medium acceleration. Greased all the joints. They seemed in good condition but when I replaced both front and rear...

Trouble Shooting 2001 Humvee with 4 speed trans in limp mode

The part where you say the gauges are trying to reset every 10 seconds...sounds like there may be a short somewhere that is popping a breaker and resetting and popping again. There is not much wiring in there so I would start with a visual inspection of your wiring harness front to back looking...

Vent line rubbing on CV boot

Just something to look for during your next PMCS... Happened to find the vent line rubbing on the boot. The clamp was twisted too far down and the vent lie rubbed on the boot during turns and nearly wore through the line and the boot. I just loosened the clamp and twisted it the other way so it...

    Thermostat fan switch temperature ranges?

I suspect you are getting Chinese knockoff switches. They are known to vary widely in their activation temps. From what I can tell, most of the switches you see for sale are the repops. This is what my known genuine switch looked like. Thick heat sealed plastic. Expired shelf life date.

    Restoration sequence of events

You are really going to have to start with a thorough cleaning. Strip off everything removable. Top, seats, insulation boards and padding... Then go after it with a scraping tool/flat bladed screwdriver to bust up the compacted filth in all the cubby boxes and crevices. Then shop vac all...

    Jump starting using 12v systems

That's how mine was. Had batteries but from 2010 Everything at auction just about comes with dead/no batteries. They just slave start them...which is the preferred method of jump starting. Fast, and PVT Goof-proof . I had pre purchased two new 6TL batteries from O'reillys for 200 each, new...
