Welcome from another 20 year old 5 ton owner! I haven't picked it up yet, but I bought an M928A1 in August. It is the first vehicle I have ever owned myself.
I like this one, simpler is better. That said, I still lean toward your design with the M939 front end.
Another idea- how about specifically an M936 variant on there? The wrecker specifically being used/depicted could symbolize other things, i.e all these members helping each other.
As someone just mentioned bridge plate: How about something involving that iconic M939 series front end as a logo, with the bridge plate? Could go on the back the Steel Soldiers logo/moniker, along with the 20 years 1999-2019 and whatever else on the front.
