State Farm would not insure my M818 even though I have my M35 insured with them.
I went with Gulfway. Gulfway will also insure trailers. Whatever you do, make sure you read the policy. What is in writing is what you have.
I have my M35 tagged permanent antique. I'm doing the M818 the same.
If someone has a complete dead alternator they want to donate, I'll take it apart and source the parts. I used to work for a after market supplier and know all about the Prestolite/Leece Neville 24V alternators. I can get the parts if they are available.

Having done a lot of destructive testing on large bolts, pins, and other hardware I would say it's more likely that the saftly pin failed and allowed the 1 inch pin to come out.
