Mechanical with standard tranny is the way to go...millions of WWII trucks set up that way lasting 65 years...no electronic stuff to corrode and no clutch packs to burn and solenoids to clog. etc

The original style tops with the Ordnance design are about $800 retail these days if you can find them... The ones being made now are for the 900 series truck and are a few inches wider for the ever growing driver...
My 1008 had a Meyers on it when I bought it from the VT State Game Wardens.. electric motor out front...running off the second battery of the 24 V system... worked fine.. sold it...
Comes up surplus sometimes in rolls.. you cut the length you want and slip it over the chain... remember to cut a hole in the stowed low part to let the rain out...and you can hog ring it top and bottom to keep it in position...

Get those "factory manuals" and read them in bed for a few weeks... I visited a guy yesterday with a M37 who said "How do I get my winch drive shaft off? I said where are your manuals? Given same I turned to the paragraph titled "Removing winch drive shaft" 'nuf said.....
All of em were originally made in the early years with the sprag. The air shift was made as a kit for upgrading old ones. You can convert your truck... easiest method is to r and r the xfer case with a air shift one and just put in the switch and air line. Your comment about permanent 6...

should be a yellow sticker somewhere with USE SILICONE BRAKE FLUID ONLY in large letters...sometimes on dash, door, seat or floor pan cover.. smell and taste the stuff from your car... DOT3 and see if it is the same as what is in your truck... dot 5 will not mix with water etc.. see a hundred...
