    M1009 Transmission options question: TH400 vs 700R4

Putting a 700R4 in a CUCV with the normal 4.56 gears and 235/85R16 tires will net you 1859 RPM @55MPH and 2197 @ 65MPH To achieve the same RPM with the TH400 in place, you would need a gear ratio right in the 3.00 range. For armchair comparisons, roughly the same final drive RPM as the M1009...

    CUCV m1008 bed conversion

This is the basic plan with my wrecker project.

    CUCV m1008 bed conversion

I will preface this by saying when I was trying to doctor this pic, it was with the intent to use the bedsides on a wrecker body. The back was chopped short for the cause but you will see the general gist of it.

1stumpjumper, it was your pic that I messed with on paint. With your permission I will post it for all to see.

    CUCV m1008 bed conversion

I've done a little pic alterations in Paint, to a pic a member posted. He had a 101 bed on the truck. I lowered the sides and it did look much better. I was contemplating using 101 sides on a wrecker bed project I have. I'd post the pic but I don't recall whos truck it was to get permission.

    CUCV m1008 bed conversion

I hope you keep it as is. I've not seen a conversion I liked yet. In my opinion, you would have to section the floor up to get the bed sides proportionate to the truck. The bed just sitting on the frame looks way too high for me. Again, just my point of view.

fiberglass bed shell. Ford on m1008?

It could be adapted with some 1/8 x 4" bar stock. Pack some friends, sit it up there to see if it fits and go from there. Worse comes to worse, get a tape measure.

    M1009 Transmission options question: TH400 vs 700R4

With all this said, I would agree that the OD in conjunction with the 3.08 axle gears would be all but useless. There is one other consideration though. The 700R4 has a 3.06 first gear which would help get the truck rolling a little easier if loaded. Not advocating the swap, just dispensing...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Whilst at the GA Rally I swapped beds with Speddmon and ended up with the older SECM bed on my truck. I put these boxes in the side. I've done these before with Kobalt boxes. These are the older design drawers with metal slides instead of bearings. I found the bearing slide drawers difficult to...

    M1009 Transmission options question: TH400 vs 700R4

Clarification on the 700R4 swap. Factory crossmember works fine. No driveshaft mods are needed. No custom linkage is needed. Lockup electronics are easy and earlier models of the trans can be locked hydraulically. If doing the install at home it would run between $1500 and on the high side...

    6.2 debate.

I promote the 6.2 hater contingent. I applaud their efforts to minimize and ridicule this engine. This effort is what keeps the cost of these engines within my budget.

Question on the different 6.2 intakes

The "C" engines were emission engines and had the big honking egr valve in the middle. The "J" engines were emissions exempt. The "J" intake does offer better air flow but I think 30 HP might be a bench race number. You still have the air cleaner to deal with. Add a second snorkel to the air...
