You actually didn't need to separate the batteries to charge them separately.

Deuces are all 28 volt systems. You have two 12 volt batteries hooked up in series. How are you trying to charge the batteries? Do you have a 24 volt charger? If so, you charge the batteries at the same time in series. If you have a 12 volt charger you will need to charge each battery...

For what it's worth, my MEP-003a doesn't spark when I connect the battery cables. I just checked again to confirm. I keep a Soneil Model 2404SX1 charger on mine continuously to keep the batteries charged and in good condition. I have two more I keep on my two deuces. Great little chargers.
