JBK: That's great. I'd not worry just yet about a few drops of oil, consider it an automatic rust proofing system instead! My hour meter is also spastic, but I think that is a relatively new problem, it seems to read about half what it should, but works in fits and starts. I'm going to pull it...
Hey Dan, good to see another MEP-004 owner nearby.
I got my filters from CarQuest, (numbers below). My local store usually has them in stock (because they know I use them) but even if out of stock, they get them for next day delivery. Easy.
Oil: CarQuest number 85004 (WIX number is 51653)...
There should be two wires in (120 volts AC) and they are not polarity sensitive. There are also two wires to the meter itself, and they are polarity sensitive, if you hook it up backwards the meter won't read.
Both the meter and the transducer will have a + sign marked on the output wire side...
Two things on the capacitor. First, I have a lab grade capacitor tester and I'd be glad to test it for you if you want... Only takes a few seconds.
The second thing is that an old style analog VOM works well for testing of the cap's general condition. You connect the cap to the ohms leads, and...
Remember that the meter and the transducer are supposed to be 'matched' Of the two that I have the meters have different full scale current values (one is 200 and the other is 300) and so the transducer you have may not work with the meter even if both are good.
Other than checking the...
Well, some updates...
I did a run today (actually two runs as we took a break for lunch and a parts run).
First run was about 45 minutes. It was cold (about 32 degrees) but it started up reasonably well. No nasty surprises, that was pleasant. My oil leak is fixed! I had a recurring leak on...
I'd think that turning fully counter clockwise (the lowest voltage position) would certainly reduce the load on the regulator for low speed operation. It does make sense to me to turn it down...
Definitely try to open and close them with the lever... Mine was frozen as well, and took a lot of PB Blaster, and work to get free. Once free, they seem to move OK, but have not gotten it hot enough to be sure they work properly or not--one of these days I'll be able to run it long enough, and...
I paid 1200 for mine, with known engine damage that I figured I'd be able to fix. One prime advantage was that it was near me, and relatively complete, missing only accessories and a couple of minor parts.
It is rather difficult to run with no oil pressure, personally I'd doubt that is the problem. My MEP-004 was likely a blown head gasket letting a cylinder (#4 in my case) fill with water. With an ASK generator, there is a remote possibility that the cover on the engine end was left open, and...
Mike: You'd need to check things that have 240 volt motors (like AC units) to make sure the 208 from the generator won't be a problem. Resistance loads (heating, water heater, etc.) will work OK, but may not get quite as hot as with 240 (such is life).
IMHO, this may be normal. Remember these engines don't have glow plugs, don't have a heated air intake, and so are temperature sensitive. As well, they are incredibly old technology, and not nearly as efficient as newer diesel engines.
180 out and run. Not likely! The main issues is...
IMHO, many do this, especially if unloaded. Did you have a good load on it? When cold mine smokes (smells of diesel) and I know that in the past it wet stacked (cylinder number 1 mostly).
I'd suggest getting it under load (10KW if you can) and run until it warms up and see if the smoke 'goes...
Couple of thoughts, don't forget the 'frequency' control on the panel won't do anything, you only control with the manual throttle control (lower right below the control panel).
My low fuel switch was stuck when I first started playing with my unit too, but came free and works OK now. Yours...
Get a small bag of marbles, and drop them in, then slosh around your magic mix (described above) and the marbles will help breakup whatever is in the tank, and get it into suspension so it will drain. Once done pour the marbles out the fill hole (or just leave them in, they won't hurt anything.)...
