I have to take exception to the statement that turbos do not make heat. The work the compressor side does in compressing the air definitely builds heat in the charge air to the motor. Charge air can reach temps upward of 300 degrees from the flogging of the turbo compressor vanes. Think about...
A few further comments on grounding:
Make sure the wiring for the light is grounded well. Also, the body needs to ground to the motor. There is a ground strap from the firewall to the back of the engine that is to do that. I also have had fenders that did not properly ground to the rest of...
I would be concerned with blocking the by-pass. It is there to keep water moving through the block and head to prevent hot spots from developing as the engine warms up before the thermostat opens to allow normal flow. You might check with one of the military vehicle parts dealers or with Vintage...
We had the same problem on our M-139 bridge truck. The bad bearings let the drums rub the shoes. No damage to spindles or other parts. We went through all of the brakes and found several of the shoe anchor pivots were sticking badly also, keeping the shoes from retracting properly. Fixed it all...
Well, I have heard the 427 was a problem, but I will be a hard one to convince the 465 is a problem. We have several trucks with them, and they have been very dependable for farm use.
I find it hard also to equate the gloom and doom of the write-up with the success of the same engine in...
You can easily add a turbo kit to the non-turbo truck. You do not need to go with the whistler turbo if you object to the noise. We did that with one of our trucks. More power, especially if you are not bashful with the fuel screw. I guarantee the turbo truck with turned up fuel will still make...
For one thing, put diesel fuel in it and see if the problem goes away. I would say you need a healthy percent of diesel with that hydraulic fluid to get it to fog properly out of the injectors, which improper fogging will cause hard starting and definitely the white smoke. I would hate to see...
Sam Winer Motors in Akron, Ohio (330-628-4881) has several high speed tractors in various stages of salvage. Most I saw did not have engines in them.

JR:
We use 80/90 gear oil in our trucks. I recommend you drain all boxes and replace the oil with new just as a matter of good PM, and you will know what is in the units for refills.

Pull the cover and look to see the problem. With your description, it should be quite obvious to even a novice mechanic. Also look for chips, etc. in the oil. I suspect the differential spider gear shaft is coming out and hitting the case and pinion. Look to see what damage might be occurring to...
We get the best volume for air lines and tools from the glad hand at the right rear of the truck. I believe it is the one marked emergency. I tried the in-cab on an M135 and had low volume.
Regards Marti
Whether turned up fuel costs you a motor or not is entirely related to how you drive the truck. A pyrometer or a boost gage are good tools to have for your reference. We own trucks that have been turned up, and with responsible driving, have never lost a turbo or motor. It is all related to how...
We use a strobe light to check RPM on engines, shafts, etc. where we cannot have or do not have a tachometer. Interesting how it totally freezes the motion to the point we have to watch ourselves because we might absent-mindedly reach into a turning fan, etc.

I have never seen a vacuum line connection to the transmission in these trucks. Yes, other GM transmissions like some Allisons and 350 and 400 automatics have them, but not this transmission. The TM 9-8024 does not refer to any either. The governor they are referring to in the transmission...
Detroits are another of those love/hate items. We have a 8v92, a 6v53 we just redid the heads on and an 8v71, all of which we like very well. You can so easily modify the power rating on these engines by just changing out the injectors, no fuel injection pump to mess with. These engines have...
I do not know if NAPA has the gasket. We have re-installed used ones with no problem using high-temp RTV if the gasket is not damaged and the mating surfaces on the manifold and turbo are clean and flat. We find it works best to run a small bead of RTV around the gasket on both sides and let it...
I agree with Armyman that the larger air filter was to provide clean air longer under bad conditions because of larger filter area. There is also less room on a deuce fender for the larger can.
We modified a five ton engine for one of our deuces, part of the modifications included head...
We have two trucks with the spin-on filters and are very happy with how quickly the oil pressure comes up. Don't forget, Oliver tractors and White tractors that use the same 478 motor that is in our trucks are equipped with spin-on filter bases. We have bought three from local salvage yards...
