I agree with RWH, it is a whole lot easier to remove hood and radiator stack. I cant imagine trying to attack a water pump any other way. Once you guys remove the stack you will see that it's waaaaay easier.
Also a little hint-- take on end of your hinge pins and run it up on a bench grinder...
I was in the back seat when that video was made!!! I was telling the driver to go slow..... but didn't happen. This was the second one that this has happened. We had replaced the fan, gone through the same water, same speed and not had an issue. The old blades will fail. I have not driven mine...
My local machine shop made a big deal out of drilling the hole-- that's why I didn't mention it. Yes it could be drilled out to 7/8. For me it was easier to just order one than deal with my machine shop clown.
Starter specialist on fleabay-- 3 1/8 d 7/8 bore 2 groove pulley, Under $20. It has a keyway in it, but you can still use it. Most alternators don't use keyways anymore.
The old military pulley will NOT fit.
That brings back memories of high school. I worked at a shell gas station back in the day and we had the contact with the post office to do all service and mechanical work on those old jeeps. Learned how to adjust brakes on the front where the wouldn't pull when you stopped. Simple design and...
Delco 21si-- 74m is a member on here and he has them. This set up is a quarter of the price, wont over charge and fry your electronics, and can be rebuilt or replaced without having to re-mortgage your house. Single wire hookup and very little fab work. I've done this with my 5 ton as well and...
Just an update on fan replacement-- plan on being there a little while. You will have to remove your radiator stack to replace your fan blade. I had some down time today, so I figured I'd practice what I preach. Replacing fan blade, belts, and installing my delclone alternator. The blade is to...
I can tell you what happened-- water broke a few blades, causing an imbalance, thus taking out the water pump. My buddy did the same thing trying to (take it easy) driving it home 30 miles. He was not as lucky as you, got his radiator as well.
What I meant to say is cut a few blades off your...
The belts on these vehicles are old and weathered. Every surplus Humvee that I've seen should have them replaced. The belts are cheap enough and should be part of your maintenance checklist.
Not to bad of a job-- can be done in about two hrs. You will cut your hands, that fan blade is a barracuda mixed with a pit bull. You will have to disconnect the hydraulic hose that goes to your fan clutch. If you have big hands -- this is where the challenge come into play. Take your time and...
Water broke the fan blade-- witnessed two already. Anyone that has purchased a surplus Humvee, do yourself a favor and change the drive belts and the fan blade with a new one. They are old and brittle. The first one that broke took out the shroud. The second one that broke on my other buddy's...
Do them yourself. What better way to familiarize yourself with your vehicle. You have all the knowledge base at your fingertips. Its just nuts and bolts. Most part stores have a tool loan program, if you don't have your own.
Papakb-- I was typing while you were posting. Thinking the same thing...
