The military built them the way they did for a reason. They didn`t put that much steel and design them that way unless they felt they had to.I bet structural integrity had something to do with it.
When I was in the USMC we had pintlles on a few dueces to load trailers on LST ships.Once on deck they were unhooked and moved with work parties into position and tied down.
