I drain my tanks of water only at the end of each day. If it's going to be several days before driving again, I drain all air as well. When I was on active duty, the common practice was to drain water only at the end of each day, but I don't remember what the 'official' procedure was. I do...
The brakes on a Deuce work well when they are in good condition. The problem is a combination of the single MC and the totally unknown condition of the brake system when received from GL or elsewhere for that matter.
When I was in the Army (70-71), all M37s I ever drove or saw had the spare mounted to the drivers door. Since it was a PITA as others have mentioned, some of the spares were simply laid down in the bed, but the mounts were all on the door. I have no idea if the older M37s had the door rack...
My Deuce came straight from GL with virtually brand new Interstate 6TLs. It is possible that you have military aircraft batteries. These are normally 24V batteries in one package.
It could be that when you initially picked up the donor truck you didn't notice the clutch slipping. It could be that you need to replace the clutch disk, pressure plate and have the flywheel machined. Also, you most likely don't know how the donor truck was driven previously - they may have...
You have eliminated the solenoid as a problem when you connected cables directly to the solenoid. You either have a relay problem or a poor cable connection(s) between battery and relay or relay and solenoid. I would pull each cable and thoroughly clean the contacting areas involved. If that...
The paint is very good on the generator. It will look much better once I get the trailer sandblasted and painted. The most important thing is that it runs well. It has very low hours, so I hope that continues.
Here are some photos of the MEP-003A GenSet that I picked up at Ft Jackson a few months ago. It was in virtually perfect condition, except for the batteries, some rusty screws on the control panel and some surface rust on the trailer in a few places. There was also a broken brake line, easily...
Are you certain that the new batteries were fully charged when you installed them? Lead acid batteries should always be fully charged prior to placing in service and this will make them also last longer. The original dry charge on the batteries is minimal. This could account for the seemingly...
Speddmon,
Thanks for the information. You are indeed a wealth of information on these GenSets. I'm also guilty of idling my MEP-003A for a couple of minutes prior to taking it to operational RPMS. I'll definitely stop letting it idle and start bringing it up to speed immediately. I have had...
One trick I learned while in the army was to turn the headlights on for 10 minutes prior to attempting to start in very cold weather. The drain from the headlights warmed up the battery enough to allow the engine to crank. Obviously, leaving them on too long won't do you any good.
Speddmon,
I have drifted off-topic, but I am going to show my ignorance and ask how the VR could be damaged by holding the start position longer than 10 seconds. Not that I doubt you - you are the resident expert on the MEP-003A GenSets and have been very helpful. I thought that holding the...
Mike helped me as well at Ft Indiantown Gap when I picked up my Deuce several months ago. He was very helpful, didn't rush me and offered some good suggestions. Fortunately, my Deuce fired right up, had good brakes and all fluids were topped off.
The best way to improve your limitations is to take on new challenges, and learn from them. Documentation on Deuces is excellent and easily available on this site and elsewhere. Excellent advice is available also and oftentimes you will find people willing to physically help you in addition to...
I have an MEP-003A GenSet, trailer mounted. The coldest I have started it was at 17 deg F. I heated it for about 30 seconds and held the starter for about 15 seconds. It started as easily as in warm weather although there was a lot of white smoke for the first 30 seconds or so of running.
Whoa! You do not want to pull an M105 behind a Jeep Wrangler. Besides being illegal, it is very dangerous due to the weight, even when empty. You need to pull it with something much bigger or trade it for a lighter trailer.
