switching from DOT 5 to DOT 4 brake fluid

I don't know about problems mixing DOT 4 and DOT 5, but I do know that DOT 4 attracts water just like DOT 3. DOT 5 does not attract water as it is silicone based. DOT 5 is far superior to DOT 3 or DOT 4, albeit more expensive. I would recommend sticking with DOT 5 and thereby avoiding any...

    Concrete

Make sure you compact as much as you can and use gravel as the base, use plenty of re-bar, 4,000 - 4,500 psi concrete. Don't scrimp on any of the three and you will do fine. I saw someone jacking up a truck once, and the jack punched a hole in 4-inch concrete, and it was undoubtedly a low PSI...

    M35a2 V.S. my house

Man, really sorry to hear about your house! I hope you don't have problems with your homeowners insurance. Or perhaps it would be covered by your liability policy on the Deuce. You should probably try to put in a claim against your Buddy's insurance first. That will be an expensive repair.

    Hello from Georgia

Welcome to Steel Soldiers! It's good to have another member in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I'm about 10 miles east of Hiawassee. Let me know if I can ever help.

    Parking Brake won't release

I haven't had problems with my Deuce cable freezing up, but I have had other vehicles e-brake cables freeze up. Dittle's idea of the torpedo heater is a very good one. I have done this and it works well - just make sure you aren't cooking anything under your truck with it.

deuce wont crank when its cold out

If your truck starts when warmer, but not when colder, another trick is to try heating the starter solenoid with a heat gun and see if it will then start. Next, try heating the relay. One caveat - don't use too much heat! It takes a few minutes for the heat to penetrate and heat the insides...

To Winch or Not to Winch a No-Winch M35A2? Opinions

I've driven Deuces with and without winches in the Army, but only a winch truck in recent years. The only difference I've ever noticed is the obvious difference in the extension of the front end. I have had people tell me that front tires wear out faster with a winch due to the extra weight...

    Successful recovery!

Congratulations on your new Deuce! It looks really good. You were lucky to find such a good truck so close.

    Lost Fifth Gear

The transmission is now out of the Deuce and I'm moving the PTO over to the replacement trans I got from TWRIGHT. Had to clean up the PTO - it was full of trash, but gears look good. I need to replace the rubber boot, which looked good before removal. Old transmission is toast - sorry no pics...

how 2 have fun on a half track

Really, Really, Really Stupid! I had a good friend when I was in the Army that was in an M114A1E1 that flipped. Almost cut him in two. Disgusting to treat that equipment like that., also.

    rewiring MEP004 for single phase

I have an MEP-003A GenSet and although I have let it run for extended times with minimal load, I have not had it wet stack yet. However, my Deuce will definitely wet stack if left idling for extended times and my John Deere 5520 (89 HP) tractor will wet stack very easily if left running at...

    Convoy Light Mast Dimensions? M35A2

I have a Deuce with an original convoy light still mounted. It is currently pouring down rain, but as soon as it stops I'll go out and take the measurements for you. I can't tell you the extended height because it is rusted in place in the down position and I have been too lazy to fix it.

So my deuce came with Michelin radials...

Using bias tubes in radial tires will eventually result in a blowout for the previously mentioned reasons - just a matter of time. You should change them!

    Cold weather and Mep003

I keep two 60-watt bulbs in my well house to keep it from freezing in the winter. Before the incandescents disappear, I plan to buy several cases of incandescent bulbs for future use. The coldest I have started my MEP-003A GenSet was 17 degrees. It seemed to start just as easy as if it was...

So my deuce came with Michelin radials...

It is impossible to use tubeless tires of any type with split rims. There is nothing wrong with using radial tires with split rims, but they must have tubes. You will find that your radials have tubes.

    Winching ops 1954 style

I'm always amazed when I see people winching, snatch block or not, and everyone is standing around the winch cable. Or when towing via cable - same thing. I try to use chain as much as I can, and like Rizzo said, use 2 or 3 loops of chain to secure a snatch block. Winching or using tow cables...
