When you bled the brakes, did you bleed the air pack first?
Brakes staying on after application point to an air pack problem. Do the brakes release when you open the air pack bleeder?
Heath, you are right in the sense that personal preference has a lot to do with how one perceives the "looks". From a practical perspective, I prefer mine singled out. It still rides like an ox cart, just a slightly more comfortable one.It actually turns, does not push over the fronts in sharp...
I thought I had a good idea and went to town with some threaded rods, washers and nuts. It did indeed work, but I did not like the looks in the long run. I since removed the assembly.

I admire your dedication and the amount of restauration you are doing. 181's are not yet so rare that many people would go to this extent to save one. It would likely have been scrapped under different circumstances.
A+!
I downshift with double clutching and rev matching. Habit. Seems to work just fine as long as one is aware of the max. speeds for the individual gears. The military wisely provided these on the little data plate in front of the steering wheel.
No synchro in first. It is possible to downshift...
Yes, I actually had the glove box screws out, but getting the box wrench up proved to be easy enough so I did not pull the glove box. It would give you more space, though. The other bolt was a bit of a challenge.
It is summer, it is hot, we all like a cold beverage. If this is why you opened this thread, sorry! Get a cooler.
My adorable wife complained that getting in and out of the cab on the passenger side is not easy and she would like something to hold on to when the going gets a little rougher. I...
As welldigger said. See my signature.
Also, what do you consider "historically accurate"? Do you mean "as it was first delivered to the Army"? Or does it include the upgrades and improvements the military itself made to the truck until it left active service?
I want to keep my truck...
It appears that, new air pack or not, it got stuck, just like the well described failure mode.
I would suggest to drip some air tool oil both into the J-pipe (or pipe plug, if you can get it off) and into the supply line to the air pack (to take care of the front end).
Disclaimer: I do not own an A3.
I think it would be helpful if members posted not only the (often very good and detailed) descriptions of how the failure occurred, but also what the teardown of the tranny by a repair shop actually revealed, and what the $$$ damage turned out to be.
This would...
I drove my truck with the stock duals 9.00-20 and flipped the hubs, drove it with 9.00-20 NDTs singled out and then upgraded to 11.00-20 radials. All this to say that I have a little bit of experience with different configurations.
Look-wise, I much prefer the duals, preferably aggressive tread...
Scottmh, I have no idea what your background is, so it is difficult to hit the right tone. You could be a master mechanic or a baker, for all I know. Buying a truck at a government auction has its risks. If you read the threads suggested above, you find out, why. How much do you actually know...
Yes and no, sir. The operative word is "flush". You stick the garden hose into the filler neck but provide an exit for the water (commonly the lower rad hose); leave the hose running and thereby flush stuff out of the rad and (parts of) the cooling system.
Then put the hose back on, fill the...
Locking fuel cap:

And a trail camera in a good location to shoot pictures of whoever crawls around the truck...
Glad to hear you manage to track down some culprits. I do not know the history of your truck; sometimes, if diesel fuel with a (high) Biodiesel component is used, it does not like to sit for extended periods of time (months, years). It attracts moisture and algae can grow in it. They are usually...
