You are confusing HMMWV with CUCV. The HMMWV gears are much lower, but use gear reduction hubs. The CUCV (trucks) have the 4.56 gears

Somebody swapped your truck out to 1009 axles. Go see CUCVRUS and get the 1009 axle. Just swap it out. Less work and prob better in the long run.

It doesn't take much of a leak to make a mess. Get a gallon or two and keep an eye on the level. As long as oil pressure is ok you should be fine
