What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

No maintenance on mine today other than a proper PMCS. Ran it hard for about 40 miles at mostly 55 mph. Surged to 60+ quite a few times but I'm trying to keep my foot out of it. The only maintenance done in the past 2 weeks has been a fuel filter change. Desplined hubs on the front are still...

LVS / Mk48 Tow Bar - How is it used?

MK48/15 combo's used the short towbar. They would also pick the front end up using the A Frame on the rear end of the wrecker coupled with a very capable winch. I've added one to my collection as PLS's with E CHU's might cause clearance problems when lift towed behind my M984A4 Wrecker. Never...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

tobyS, I honestly believe the best way to have a locking / unlocking hub would be to do what I did. Sure, it's a few bolts to undo and replace on each side so it's not quite as easy as the hubs on my M1028 CUCV. Members have made locking hubs in the past and they may be available but I've read...

    Thanks Simp5782 - Wes Simpson

Wes is a good guy. I sometimes store stuff that people purchased from Albany, Ga and he picks it up in a timely manner. FloridaAKM's trailer was an abnormality, Wes dropped it off in my front yard and went to haul some more pressing freight. During that time, I towed it around with my 5 ton...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

tobyS, the splines in my caps measure roughly 2 3/16" at the high points using a tape measure. My friend who desplined them might have more accurate measurements. He goes by Welder1 on this forum and his name is Eddie. He may not have measured though, he said he turned them until the metal...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Desplined axle caps review I just installed my desplined caps yesterday but was tired from working at my friends shop so I didn't drive it until today. I could tell a difference right away. The modification has some fairly obvious advantages for highway use. The first thing I noticed is how...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Original caps sandblasted and ready for paint. De-splined caps installed and painted. Now the wheel looks better than the rest of the truck, it'll soon be time to sandblast the truck so I can get it looking as good..

roll call of EXISTING Vietnam gun trucks

I had an opportunity to purchase "Proud American". I had to pass due to lack of funds but I had found a place to store it. I would have hated to scratch the paint anymore than I already had but I use my trucks to do work. The moment that I felt I had made the right decision came on January...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Finally got my desplined front caps installed. Taking the take-offs to be sandblasted before I paint them. Considering painting them red in order to identify which ones are on the truck with a quick glance.

    Bad Fuel Pump?

I'd start with the basics that WillWagner has taught many of us. I'd take an infrared heat gun and determine for sure which cylinder was cold in relation to the others by checking the exhaust manifold. Since it's an 8.3 and it's easy enough to do, I would try moving the injector from the cold...

    Value of 1986 CUCV M1008

I say negotiate a deal that can make both of you happy. There is a market for these trucks but it's somewhat limited. I had a generous offer for mine in this same thread but it got deleted. It is what it is. It's a 30 year old chevy with the best running gear that they had when built. I've...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I'll still have my splined caps for adverse conditions on board along with a socket wrench to swap around. My de-splines will be painted black to indicate normal use and my splined caps will be painted yellow to indicate emergency use. Might even add a ball valve for the air supply to the dash...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Got a set of front axle flange drive caps, my friend Welder1 is de-splining them. Looking forward to reducing some drag in the near future. I've heard as good as a 1 mpg difference so I'll see if I get that lucky. Simp said they're good for 5 horsepower!!!

    Oshkosh 977 HEMTT 1987

Will do. Look underneath for an oil drip or puddle on the ground. Pull the engine oil dipstick and confirm it it within operational range. Check coolant level, confirm it's good and run it!

Official 2018 Ga. Military Vehicle Rally info thread. Oct. 17-21, 2018

Got my cabin reservations booked! Might not get to come this go around but I've made plans to make sure my trucks get there! New tires and injectors for the CUCV, fuel card for the 5 ton. If I'm not able to go, Lee and the boy's will be there so show them some love!!! I may be overseas, my...

    Oshkosh 977 HEMTT 1987

The two things I love about my National Guard M984A4 wrecker are the absence of the 8V92 and the A4 has air conditioning. The Detroit sounds great for a short ride bit I'll just thank the taxpayers for giving me a Cat C15 in my new wrecker along with a/c. One thing the Detroit did well was...

    Value of 1986 CUCV M1008

I agree with DogHead, I can't even give this one away! It does have some desirable axles under it. For what it's worth to everyone else, I'll keep it.

    Members expertise urgently needed

I know people bash the multi for being weak power wise but in my experience, it makes up for it in reliability. I no longer have a multi powered anything out here on my 2 acres. I probably put 10,000 miles on my M35A2 while I had it. The truck always fired on perhaps the second rotation of...

M923 Transfer Case upgrade to Oshkosh 55000

I'll post some pictures tomorrow evening of the factory set-up from my M984A4 that's sitting in the motorpool at work. I'll even lay tape on the framerails. Please let me know if you need a close-up picture of any particular part of the mounting arrangement.

    Dragging brakes on M35A2

How much free play do you have in the brake pedal? With the truck running or just air pressure built up, remove the master cylinder cap and apply and release the brakes. You should be able to see fluid drop slightly when applying and rising upon releasing. What I found on a friends truck is...
