Yes. The system will not run long if it is low on Freon.
Service it by attaching a set of gauges (without loosing a lot of gas) when you attach them and reading the High and Low side of the system would give you a boost in the right direction.

Yeah, a leak in the air tank can definitely be a pin hole in the bottom of the tank. I would carry a spare tank. I would also take a bottle of 25% Dawn and Water and spray down the area, and watch for the bubbles. I had one on a M936 and it was rusted through to bottom... It was a bummer...

You might crawl under the vehicle and look for a tag on the axle...
Generally speaking - the weight is classed as "off road" weight.
