    Air horn woes

I was in a mess like this with my fuel gauge. Big surprise. I swapped gauge, NG. Put original back. Swapped sender, still NG. I then connected the new gauge and new sender together on the bench and supplied 24v to it. It worked perfectly. I swapped both into the truck, and the system...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

We have a perfect running DT466E and MaxxForce 7 that we are getting ready to discard at my work. Sorry, we are not throwing away the ISX or ISB's yet...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Any pitting on the top of a piston is either too much heat or mechanical indentations from a foreign object bouncing around in the combustion chamber during running. Engines that exhibit pre-ignition/detonation will typically show this. I have never seen a ring gap close unless it is loaded...

    Thanks for the info.

    M925A2 oil

If you want it by the book, then any 15w40 oil with an API rating of CH4/SG in the starburst symbol.

    Air horn woes

None of the M939/A1/A2 were originally equipped with ABS. They all should have been MWO's to have ABS added, unless liquidated before the MWO went active. http://www.roscommonequipmentcenter.com/MWO%209-2320-272-35-1.pdf Battery may and should absorb any spikes, but an oscilloscope would...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

They now have park and neutral rev limiters to prevent slam shift on the auto transmissions. With electronic throttle valve now, this is easy to do without giving the customer the old style rev limiter feeling of cutting out spark. I have seen rods through oil pans and blocks also. Usually...

    Compression testing M929A2 8.3 Cummins

Interesting, thanks. We could not find such information when working on an ISX and was told Cummins does not publish such info. What is the source of this info (what is a QSOL)?

    Air horn woes

Disagree. Going without it may cause voltage spikes into your system, and could fail electronics which are not protected against such, such as the ABS module (proven to fail) or the voltage regulator in the alternator. They added it for a reason. You'd have to put a scope on it to confirm...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

0, once, and fine, respectively. I'm not sure what any of that has to do with engine longevity, but mine is still running great through all of that regardless. I said I can help load your pistons whenever you are ready to do so. You are not at that point yet. I don't have time to sit around...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Who has a 39 page thread of their engine not running right, and being fully apart....twice?

    Air horn woes

It is needed because when the horn solenoid releases/closes, it generates a big spike that would otherwise go through the system, much like an ignition coil (they discharge their high voltage when power is removed and the mag field collapses). If your horn switch tests OK, then it is probably...

    M923A2 motor dead

Your wife didn't do anything wrong. Way cool she will get in and handle it. An A2 doesn't need the fuel cut reset. The fuel cut solenoid is problematic though on these. It will go to stop mode even after extended cranking as it heats up and battery voltage drops. I say add 10 gallons of...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Thanks for the support. A rod typically comes apart at TDC of piston travel, while attempting to reverse and pull the piston weight back down from the upstroke. I can't see how engine being loaded vs not would make a difference. I have always heard people scared to rev an engine on no load vs...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

I was unable to thank this post twice, even though I tried. Mostly in part that it will run 2800r's just fine, and probably run the best it ever has after that. Then, when we finally drive down to the Findlay show, he'll go more than 49mph, maybe we can actually tool along at 55mph. I'm...

Saying Farewell to an Old Friend

I'm not intelligent enough to know, and too lazy to look it up. Is an M108 a rotator, and was it available with a diesel engine? I'm thinking yes to the first question, because I see stabilizer pads on the sides. Please don't say yes to both, as I'll be posting in the vehicles wanted section.....

    Alternator Conversion Bracket, DIY

In my ever long quest to get better alternators on our machines, reliably, and at a reasonable price, I have posted the correct cast alternator mounts from Cummins to utilize economical and available civilian J-180 "short" alternators. These factory brackets can add $100 to the cost of a...

    Compression testing M929A2 8.3 Cummins

Could be sucking air on the tank lines. Have you replaced them? Cummins does not not specify compression data, or even leak down data. They only assess engine health via crankcase blow-by measurement. I did buy an adapter to do compression and leak on my 8.3, but have not used them yet.
