Neat!! Glad to have found a little info and I wish I could drive it over the border for you.
That is a COOL truck!
Finding the NSN 2320-00-999-8418
and a
Technical Manual TM9-2320-230 Series
That few numbers might be useful as well...
.
I don't know squat about the M-656. It looks like a REALLY NEAT truck though!!
The information about flat towing that I have seen suggests removing the drive shafts. Just plain logic says that if you have a problem with the input shaft on the transfer case - removing the drive shafts would...

Wow! Right to left, reading Asian:
M37 (sometimes known as a Dodge Weapon's Carrier)
M135 GMC Deuce and a Half (Best Guess) 6x6 with a GMC 302 6 cylinder in-line, 130 hp gas & GM Hydramatic (aka G-749, M-211)
M35 Reo Deuce and a Half, Possibly 330 Reo powered with an in-line 6, Gas powered...

I would guess that with the truck sitting more than being driven...
Then imaging that with time "gunk" grows in fuel tanks.
Small flakes of rust (or maybe not in an aluminum tank) get sloshed off the tank walls.
Could have been that you picked up water or trash in a refuel stop too...
Just...

I avoided that part of the conversation.
If a person with that kind of compressor had access to a waterjet, having several sets would be fantastic.
One in the toolbox.
One set in the truck.
A spare or two or three would be really nice  too
.
Quick simple answer was a "not so good" design.
If the front axle is disengaged, the problem can be avoided.
By default, front axle is automatically engaged.

Gee, I dunno... Aged patina is pretty neat but freshly painted sure would look "mighty fine".
I'm a little "torn" about the white roof, but if it wasn't a combat truck it sure would be cooler than green.
.
If you have a burning desire to make that green paint look better - you could always paint it white to match your truck. One of the other guys on here has a camping setup in a small military trailer. He painted it to match his white truck too. Looked amazingly good that way...
So, there are options for knowing what is in your truck. You bought it from an individual that had gotten your truck by way of auction if I read correctly. By chance has he changed fluids in the truck - or added some?
Lubricants... Just remember, if it was working before - changing it to...

That's great!
Having help with welding skills will be great - and who knows - you might even learn some new techniques.
Can't say that I know of a better source than RockAuto.
Would think that you need to paint some of the stuff that Glidden sells to stop the rust too.
Just to fix any...

Kip, I watched the video. You could plumb in an air fitting. On the right side under the dash, that almost looks like a drain valve but I couldn't quite tell for sure. You could even follow the hose up to the air wipers and plumb in your quick connect there and have a valve that you can...

Looking for air...
So I guess I have more questions.
• There are no gladhands on the front or back of your truck?
• You have air tanks?
In a perfect world, the front gladhands are for applying air to your truck when being towed. One hand is to apply the brakes. The other hand is...

The outer shoe sure looks worn to me. Can't tell for sure, but it looks like a prime candidate for replacement. I wonder if that grease fitting needs a little attention. What should happen is that pair of shoes "float" on that center pin and when adjusted, both shoes should contact the...

I don't know if you have ever heard of a guy named Jay Leno, but he is the proud owner of a Ferett. Another guy in California named Jeff Dunham has several YouTube videos of his vehicle on the streets in that state. I know you ain't them and chances are that your wallet isn't as fat - but...
.
That is the job we signed up for.
Most often flying solo though...
Not near as much fun as a building full of wrench turners.
... But we do have to keep ourselves entertained
