I'd pull the spline caps off and go for a drive once you get it fixed. If the axle doesn't break, I'd look into whats wrong with the transfercase.
Its gotta come off either way, looks like its off now. I'd swap the housing since you know where to get on e at a good price, depending on shipping costs.

I would think it should work ok. I still charge my batts one at a time at least once a year though. It helps keep them in top shape.
That sounds like the shock was bad. I had one go bad and it would do the same thing just slowing down for a stop sign. I've towed these thousands of miles and had no problem when all the parts were in working order.
