Chelsea PTO (Take-Off) for my M1088

Hi Chucky, No, Nothing yet. This one came of a M1078 with an Allison transmission. I ASSuMEd that it was the right PTO assembly only because I got it directly off the truck. I even got the 12 point bolts that attach it to the transmission so I was pretty excited until I found the cracked...

Chelsea PTO (Take-Off) for my M1088

Thanks Wes! I believe I found another post somewhere on the site that mentioned a Muncie PTO. May have been one of your posts ;-) . I also need to figure out what kind of pump I want to drive with it. Winch is going to be it's primary job - but with hydraulics on the truck - I am going to...

Is it safer to wear seatbelts, or not?

I think that may be where the saying "Hey Y'all, Watch This" came from. It is amazing how "the new guy" in a shop just has never been in the situation before - and so stupid stuff can (and will) happen. It is pretty important for those with experience speak up! We all need to apply as much...

Chelsea PTO (Take-Off) for my M1088

The thing that I was most concerned about was getting the winch and frame pulleys. Got those. Removed them from the frame and have started working to clean and straighten and grease the rollers. In a cardboard box, I found the Chelsea PTO that was removed from the transmission. Nice & Red...

Hydroplane Warning - Houston Fire Dept. 5-Ton

Supposedly that rain is headed on over to the east coast. Starting tomorrow and solid rain all day. The "nit-wits" around here have a hard enough time driving on dry streets - so we should end up with several hundred wrecks in that two day span. Go figure. .

Hydroplane Warning - Houston Fire Dept. 5-Ton

Wow! That truck took a HARD hit to knock out the front axle... Sure hope the driver (and passenger if there was one) weren't injured. Thankfully it looks like just that one vehicle was involved... And you can see the grooves in the concrete - designed to keep that from happening too!

LED tail lights on the cheap

Toby, Any particular kind of control box that is better than another? I wired up a string of small strobes (look like marker lights) and to be honest I don't know what I expected - but all ten of them are just "doing their thing". There is no reasoning or sequence to when they blink. Some...

Winch problem on a fire dept M54A2 5ton

You just can't beat having a backup plan in your business! So neat that you have a winch truck available if you need it. Maybe we need to get you some magnets for the doors so your truck looks "official" if you have to go somewhere in a hurry...

Winch problem on a fire dept M54A2 5ton

That adapter was definitely a FIRST CLASS idea! I would say that piece goes into the tool box with hopes of never having to use it again. And to serve as a reminder of that day in December 2020 when things didn't go exactly according to plan. (I have several such pieces myself!) Reading...

    M197A1 Converter Dolly Refurbish

Seems like some of your projects are like mine... They take more than a day or two to complete. :) . Not wishing any "slowdowns" for you - but it sure is nice to see that I am not the only one who doesn't seem to be able to finish a project in a few weeks! That is definitely a neat dolly...

Winch problem on a fire dept M54A2 5ton

Wow... fasttruck That is a really nicely written piece of information on winches with pictures to boot! Curiosity question: Cable Cover. Is that something that you made or something that was standard issue and 50 years of sun wiped out for the rest of us?

    Trailer recovered

It sure seems like you are dead on... It looks really funny all jacked up in the front, but it pulled well. Discovered that our fancy new $4,500,000 bridge has no height placard. There are 6 different truck yards on the other side of that bridge. Guess they are not concerned about anybody...

57 Continental R6602 Recommended Fuel Octane

Absolutely!! I agree 100% and the farmers aren't making any money on the corn they sell to make gas - and from what I understand - it actually costs more to make ethanol than gas. Not sure that is a cold hard fact, but it wouldn't surprise me.

    Trailer recovered

I went to pick up a 45 using my M1088. Mine Happened to have come from Overnite - and is a nice match sitting there beside the Carolina that I already owned. I was at 14 feet 5 inches. Had I been pulled over, the DOT man would have given me all the attention I could stand for being...

57 Continental R6602 Recommended Fuel Octane

Paul, Whatever you do - don't run "ethanol flavored" gas in your truck. It has a tendency to eat the carburetor gaskets as well as all the other horrible things that Karl mentioned. I made that mistake with a 29 Model A and I am still fishing bits and pieces of the fuel tank insides out of...

M936 Wrecker Hydraulic Fluid Civilian Counterpart

Shell Tellus 46 is a good grade of Hydraulic Oil. 10wt, lots of good anti-wear additives. We use it in equipment in the business and I use it on tractors, log splitters and it fulfills my MV requirements. Helps that I have a Shell Distributor about two miles up the road from us...

    Diesel color

If you really have a burning desire to know what is in the fuel, there are companies that have the tools to tell you. They can give you a detailed list of what is in fuel, motor oil, gear oil, transmission fluid, and coolant. Blackstone Laboratories, Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana has been used...

    M936a1 boom leaks down

Great! You just need to sneak up on giving that winch power from the tractor. Not sure which port is "in" and which one is "out" other than to look at them by size. Generally smaller is pressure and larger is return. One of the things I want to add to my M936 is a hydraulic hose reel...

    M936a1 boom leaks down

You mentioned a tractor. Maybe with hydraulics on it? It might cost you a hundred bucks in hoses, but you could disconnect the "in" and "out" on the winch and with some adapters (small hydraulic hose would work) you should be able to power the winch. I wouldn't try to power the entire crane...

    M936a1 boom leaks down

Just a thought... I am not an insurance man - but the KEY to them (your insurance company) actually PAYING A CLAIM is that you are following the guidelines that are spelled out on the policy that you buy. They are looking for an excuse to not pay a claim - and you know and I know that 150 vs...
