A question on a M1009 that has probably been asked 1,000 times

So, I haven't been on the site for over 3 years due to multiple deaths in my family and then my own struggle with Covid, so here goes. My 1984 M1009 has basically sat for 3 years without starting. We changed out the batteries and have it running. My issue is, on my last State Inspection in 2017...

    1984 M1009 spindle

My issue atarted during Hurricane Sandy apparently. I used the truck extensively and it was subjected to a lot of salt water. My voltmeter and fuel gauge stopped working. I was using it as a daily driver, and decided to give it a rest. a few moths later, I took it out and could not shift out of...

    1984 M1009 spindle

I know this information is on this site, but I am having trouble downloading the TM's and the illustrated parts catalog that are posted for the cucv's. I am trying to find out what the OEM or Military parts number is for the front axle spindle on the 1984 series M1009. I know its shorter than...

1984 M1009 Front end / drive train issue?

OK, after letting the truck sit for over 10 weeks I finally removed the drivers side hub and rotor. The spindle is wiped out. The threads are gone. The wheel bearing was basically ground into metal chips. I was able to pull the hub and rotor off without removing the lockout hub retainer ring. I...

1984 M1009 Front end / drive train issue?

We jacked up the truck. There is a tremendous wobble when we spin the tire. You can physically shake the tire on the spindle. So, I know we have a bad wheel bearing. When I lock the locking hub, the tire continues to spin freely, so I'm thinking that the lockout hub is bad also. Anyone have the...

1984 M1009 Front end / drive train issue?

I haven't torn it down yet. There's 24" of snow on the ground. I'm just thinking that if I have to take things apart to diagnosis the problem, I might as well replace what's there now as pm for the future.

Any suggestions on where to buy the locking hubs? I want to stay as close to original as possible.

1984 M1009 Front end / drive train issue?

There's a blizzard heading towards New York, so nothing will get done this week.

1984 M1009 Front end / drive train issue?

We did look at the u joint earlier. The passenger side axle does seem to move more freely than the drivers side. I have to research whether or not this is a job we can do in the driveway, and the pricing and availability of the parts.

1984 M1009 Front end / drive train issue?

Need some help or advice on this one. My 1984 M1009 developed a bumping noise in the left front. My 18 year old son has been driving it lately, and told me about the noise he was hearing. I took it out today for what I thought would be a short test drive. Got about a block from home and started...

what branch/unit did your cucv serve with?

Is there a special web site for tracing the vin # ? My m1009 is marked on the bumper "csms" and "auto" followed by either a 3,6 or 8. I was told by the seller that it he belived it was a new jersey national guard vehicle. I found a placard marked cwo4 ok. I would like to pass it on if any...

M1009 little heat to no heat

I think i will keep the heater core that i bought for a while. It was a special order, so returning it might be a problem. As far as the under dash controls, it looks like everything is working ok, but i plan on disconecting the cable to the blend door to see if i can get it to open further.

M1009 little heat to no heat

Well today was a very interesting day. I purchased a coolant system flush kit, prestone super flush, 4 gallons of 50/50 pre-mix antifreeze, and my son and i went to work. Of course, here in ny, it was a miserable rainy day. We flushed the system twice, and went to work on replacing the heater...

Two prong NATO military slave plug?

Check out the e bay listings. I always type in cucv in search, and these always come up, along with lots of other military vehicle items. As far as jump starting, i have had to jump start my m1009 twice, and both times i attached a 12 volt portable JUMP starter to my # 1 battery.

M1009 little heat to no heat

How exactly did you insulate ? Inside the heater box ? Also, did you close off the intake on the cowl by the wiper blades ? What is your antifreeze mixture ? I am at 50/50, but heard that it should be 70/30.

M1009 little heat to no heat

Thanks for the link. I will look at the grill covers. We did make something out of the insulating board, and we painted it black. You really can't tell it's there, unless you know what to look for. Heater core goes in on saturday.

M1009 little heat to no heat

I ordered a core from the local napa store. They are going to try to get me a copper core coil. If they can't find one, i told them to get the napa branded one. If it is an aluminum core, i plan on using insulating board to insulate the core box. Hopefully it will help with the heat loss that...
