Throwing money down the CUCV hole

I had the bright idea of proving everybody wrong and patching up my rusted out CUCV with crappy welds and marine epoxy. Today I was chasing down some wiring gremlins and getting it ready for safety inspection and noticed a brand new crack running halfway down the windshield on the side where I...

    Extra bolts

I thought you guys would enjoy that. Only one fits the torque converter cover holes (also same size/thread as exhaust manifold fyi). Will send pictures soon. Great news though. When I opened up the oil pump the little plastic shaft collar broke in two. None on island so have to order one from...

    Extra bolts

Oops. Just about to install the oil pump and put the pan back on but looked to my left and there's three extra bolts sitting on the ground and have no idea where they go. Is there a list somewhere of fastener sizes so I can reverse look them up? Trying to do things the right way for once.

ok truck idles, then drives, then acts like it is out of fuel and dies

You could try hooking up send/return lines to a jerry can and drive it around a to see if it's before vs after IP issue. I also put a clear in-line filter just before IP to watch for bubbles/air leaks.

    Letting the crankshaft drop

Finally got the cap back on and torqued. Now have to to around and re-torque the rest of the caps and try to remember where the pan bolts go but the man battle is over. Sent the old munged up seal through several times as recommended and turned the crank to try and help. Seemed to be sliding...

    Letting the crankshaft drop

Got it all cleaned up and tried install again but no go, only halfway. Shoot. There were some serious chunks still up in there even after running the 4ga wire through a couple times. Using the Sneaky Pete corkscrew as a pipe cleaner I kept pulling out more and more little chunks. Then try the...

    Letting the crankshaft drop

Agreed. I'm a big fan of Gloveworks HD and also keep the costco ones near by for light duty stuff. Well turns out I celebrated too soon. Got everything cleaned up and went to install the new seal but it got stuck. Turns out there's lots more gunk left up in there so had to run the #6 wire...

    Letting the crankshaft drop

Success! Picked up some 4 and 6 awg grounding wire at the store and went slow and methodical as recommended. Needed the 4 to break it loose and the 6 to get it around the corner without shaving pieces of copper on the lip. Turned out to be a little chunk about 3/4 inch but man was it stubborn...

    Letting the crankshaft drop

https://www.amazon.com/Lisle-27000-Sneaky-Pete-Tool/dp/B0002SRCJW It's a seal puller/installer and some people swear by it. Unfortunately for me it only took out chunks since my seal was disintegrating and when I ran out of chunks it left a whole solid section behind way up in there. @mule...

    Letting the crankshaft drop

Thanks guys. No I did not unbolt the torque converter. Didn't recall seeing that in the TM procedure. Hopefully it's not to difficult to get back together again, because that very well might be the next step. I'm definitely certain there is a chunk up there blocking the way. Can see it but...

    Letting the crankshaft drop

I'm following along in the procedure to change rear main seal as per 3-34 in TM 9-2320-289-34. Rope seal disintegrated and there's a couple inches stuck up in there. Sneaky Pete has gone as far as he can go and no luck pushing it out with trimmer line/plastic push rods, so I loosened all the...

    GAA Grease

I kept reading this thread looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. Nope. Just more tunnel. I'm going with the Mobil 1 Red suggestion for now.

    Optima promo videos featuring CUCV's

That's one of the drawbacks of living on a city island. Just about everywhere worth exploring is fenced off. At least mine carries compost like a champ.

    U joint part numbers

I've searched but can't find the part numbers for stock m1008. I called auto parts stores and asked if they had spicer 1350 and they don't have a way to cross reference it. Plus they refer to 1350 as a 'series' so it may have different sizes? At this point I just want to drive around again...

Just a few reasons it's good to own a CUCV...

big plus: rear end collision with a guy who fell asleep on his pain medication and stomped the gas. Nissan truck was demolished but you could just barely make out the paint marks where he hit me. My friend was riding along that day and he still loves to tell the story. minus: road taxes here...

What is the best modification you have done to your CUCV?

60g glow plugs with manual control and pulling the resistor, spin on filter, new tires to stop the death wobble, electric fuel pump, caddy drivers side alternator, and a surfboard rack pad for the tailgate. All thanks to you guys except for the last one of course.

    TH400 filter change

Glad to hear it's happy. I put a drain plug in when I did mine.

Cleaned tank and now won't go above 35mph

Sounds good to me. Will reinstall in the am. Filled up the tank and noticed that it slid back in the bed a bit while I was *cough* enjoying the performance gains, and as a result the return was pinched. Saw a friend at the bus stop and gave him a ride home across town tonight to see if it...

Cleaned tank and now won't go above 35mph

Had a date tonight and took her to a party which was fortunately not too far away. Engine started cutting out after about 5 minutes on the highway but fired right back up again after waiting a couple minutes. This happened like 3 times. After I dropped her off at home I limped to a parking lot...

Cleaned tank and now won't go above 35mph

Thanks for your suggestions. I am really interested in this power that you speak of. Also looking for an IP that would be more compatible with vegetable oil, since I will try that route again once I'm done catching up with the maintenance. Are you talking about the DB2?
