    Pertronix Conversion?

I thought I would continue this thread since it has gone on for a while and it is lacking details. I have a M51 5 Ton dump with the R6602 Gas engine. I converted the spark plug wires to civy wires ( covered in another thread ) and I have changed the points and condenser but the ignition has...

Maryland MV owners are in trouble

It is not just liberal Democrats. I live in a very conservative Republican state (IN) and the state government is constantly trying to nickle and dime me to death. Farm plates on my '71 semi tractor at 26,000 lbs are about $350 with county wheel tax. Registration for a new Ford Superduty...

Maryland MV owners are in trouble

If you are non commercial, the DOT cops are not suppose to pull you over. Historic vehicles are not commercial! If they do, tell them you are not a commercial carrier and they should let you go.

    Deuce tire/rim break down.

Yep, and it can be extremely strenuous and frustrating if you don't do it efficiently. Seems like it is as much technique and tools as anything else. I tried to dismount an 11x20 which had been on a rim for 30+ years without a duckbill hammer and nothing worked. Even a log splitter...

    Deuce tire/rim break down.

Well I got around to more tire dismounting/mounting. I had a Mil trailer with 9x 20 tires and I got a flat. I also still had several 11x20's sitting around that needed work. I finally got a real duckbill hammer, but the handle was junk so I replaced with a nice hickory handle derived from...

    Deuce tire/rim break down.

After some serious pounding ..... I put the 11x20 tire on hold since I had to put a new tube in a 7.50x16 front tractor wheel. On the 7.50x16 I used a short duckbill tire wedge/hammer and drove that in with a 4 lb hand sledge. I think that holding the duck bill hammer/wedge with my left...

    Deuce tire/rim break down.

OK, I've read this thread and looked at the tools.. I have a short tire hammer and I put some WD 40 around the rim of a 5 ton tire/wheel and I am able to pound the bead down but it is slow going and is some serious exercise. This tire has been on this rim for a long time and I have several...

MV ignition distributor with Civilian Wires

I'm glad this helped you out. It has been about 6 months now since I did that conversion and it still starts right up even after sitting for a while, so the wires are staying secure in the cap. Dave

5 Ton wheel bearings and seals

I just pulled off all of the hubs off my M51 dump and found a variety of issues. I found the left front dual had it's locknut loose and the hub was full of gear oil. There was virtually no signs of any grease in the bearings. The hub had 2-3 cups of gear lube in it. On the other duals...

Axle Vents: Clean? Replace? Relocate? OTHER Vents?

I'm not sure I understand why the standard breather is a check valve? On other applications where I need a breather but I don't want junk to get into the oil, I have used a gas fuel filter - one of those cheap metal can types that are about $3.00 everywhere. Loop the tubing up to the frame...

new, deuce one piece 22.5" rims??

There are plenty of traction type tires available in 22.5 rim sizes. Also retreads are plentiful in that size also. If you want cheap super single traction tires I can't imagine a cheaper solution than the surplus Mil tires that are floating around. But if you are going to stick with duals...

new, deuce one piece 22.5" rims??

Yes 22.5 tires are a very common semi truck size and they are almost always tubeless.

    M817's Hard at Work

The M51 also came with the R6602 Continental Gas engine - I have a '62 M51 dump I just greased it - wow, that takes a while.. I lost count of the grease fittings... Dave

MV ignition distributor with Civilian Wires

MSD - on 24 volts..... Yep, I'm sure the wires were shot. 20-20 hindsight ;-) >> running it at night I don't think that would help much since if the wires were arcing to ground, they would be doing that between the inner core and the brass tubing shell - so you would never see the...

MV ignition distributor with Civilian Wires

Yep, Smith field and Auburn airport are about the same distance from me. For a while they were talking about closing Smith field - the big Baer field airport guys were trying to shut down Smith field. Fortunately common sense prevailed and they kept Smith open. There are a lot of small...

M52A2 trip to FL to its new home

I have been told that I-75 north of Cincinnati is pretty torn up and I-75 through Dayton is still a mess. As was said before I would come down I-71 to I-75 junction in Cincinnati. Don't do this at rush hour unless you like to sit in traffic. Cincinnati is not as bad as Atlanta but they are...

MV ignition distributor with Civilian Wires

Aircraft plug wires are compatible with Military vehicles? Geez, I didn't know that! That sort of makes sense. I might have gone that route had I known that. There are a number of small airports around me (I'm northeast for Fort Wayne) that have service shops attached. If this doesn't...

    Insurance- 818's and 915's w/trailers

Who did you get the policy with? $730 is very reasonable for a first year. I pay about $600 per truck under a commercial policy same liability levels - not for hire.
