We'll it doesn't work that way. If we do not accept this truck we are back in the queue. It may take years before we see another one. We might end up with another 3126 truck. We have no choice.

Have to weigh it out then. It's going to be roughly $10,000 to fix just the engine on that truck if it needs a HEUI pump, main oil pump, oil cooler reseal with updated gaskets, HEUI pre-filter, and labor..... Another ~$6,000 for injectors if it needs those..... Not even considering anything else that's going on with it. Last one I did needed a new turbocharger as well - huge exhaust leak from the wastegate cover plate and the cast iron exhaust housing was warped so it couldn't seal. ... Wouldn't surprise me if that truck was dropped off at my shop and the estimate to fix it was $25k. Big truck labor rates are $250+ an hour now. Gotta love inflation.

Don't ya love unmaintained government surplus?

I read the other thread from October about doing a swap to a C7. So that may be a option. Right we are just figuring out the finance side of the grants etc.

MGVFD - There's some fear mongering going on.. don't be frightened of these trucks, A1 or not. I know the A&M forestry service is doing their part to turn over trucks to departments in need such as yourself and they're not experts on this equipment. I wish Brian was still head of the program, I knew him well and helped his shop in Lufkin diagnose a few trucks over the years. I like, if not downright prefer, A1 trucks 03' and 04'. They're simple machine when you know them. If you need assistance my shop is in Ft Worth. I assist a LOT of VFDs when they first get their trucks in from grants, private sale, etc.

Take your time and start with the small stuff. The peanut gallery here giving lots of personal opinions and SWAG (scientific wild ass guesses) which are no substitute for your hands and eyes on the vehicle. I've noticed no mention of the fuel check valve/pressure regulator, attempting to run the truck off a jerry can to remove possible sources of other air leaks, and checking the timing sensors (yes, plural). The A1 trucks have a little more to them than the old 3116 mechanical motor but they have more support too.

Feel free to PM me if you need guidance.

Also, no shutoff solenoid on these A1 trucks. The older A0 trucks do.

It's not fear mongering - I work with FD trucks also and if he can get a C7 truck he should do it IMO. I would rather see them go to a rural FD than some of the idiot civilians that butcher them. I'm not a fan of 3126 trucks personally. They are responsible for the majority of the engine repairs I've had to be involved with. My 2008 has 27k miles on it (25k with me) and has had relatively few problems other than aging transducers. 3126 ECM's are twice the price and half as reliable and all the 3126 trucks have had major problems at half that mileage or lower.

That's a tall order also. Friend of mine had to replace his C7 - $35,000 at the shop in Denver. That's with a surplus crate motor not one from CAT ($55k from CAT was the estimate) - and that's not considering the changes required to move from a 3126 to the C7 (should be minor though).
