5 ton steering column/horn wire

I have a problem with the horn wire in the steering shaft. There is resistance between the horn button connecting plug and the contact sleeve on the steering shaft that I believe is keeping my horn from working. When I ground the wire that goes to the box at the bottom of the steering column the horn works fine. But if I ground the wire that comes out of the top, center of the steering shaft, the horn won't blow. I can't figure out how to get the wire out of the shaft. I took the steering column assembly out of the truck but can't figure out how to get the steering shaft out of the outer column. The TM's don't have anything about this. There is another post about this, but no information. Can anyone offer any help?

Thanks for the bump. I would still like to know how to get the shaft out of the column. But in the meantime, I figured out how to fix my horn problem. As it turns out, the shaft was not grounding to the steering column. It feels like there is a bearing at the top and maybe the bottom of the column that the shaft turns in. My continuity problem turned out to be between the shaft and the column. So I took the entire column assembly out of the truck, with the steering wheel intact. It is not very hard to do, but I think it made it easier by taking out the mid section of the intake tube to be able to get to some of the bolts beneath the floor pan.
After I had it out, I stood the column up on the steering wheel and sprayed carb cleaner (don't tell any tree huggers) into the space between the wheel and the column. I spun the column while doing this and could tell that the bearing or whatever it is loosened up some. Then I turned the column back upright to drain it and repeated this a few times. This brought continuity back between the shaft and the column, which is needed because the horn button grounds to the shaft by way of the spring.
So now my horn works:)
I hope this helps someone with the same problem.

Check the actual connection at the horn button itself. Button gets its ground through the spring. I fixed 74M35A2's horn on his M925A2 and that was part of the problem. The Horn button was not getting a good ground to work.

There is also a Diode that connects by where the horn is. It looks like just a wire that plugs into the harness, then has a bulge about half way down the wire, then has a ring terminal that connects to ground. 74M35A2's was fried and put an good take out one in it. When his diode failed, the horn stayed on and it was a fun time time at 2AM. haha! I think your problem is most likely in your button though. give that a look and make sure that it is getting a good ground through the spring. I took his and "messed up" the end of the springs a very little bit so it digs into the button and the column a little better.
