Please clarify this question, are you asking if the left side wheel studs and lug nuts are left hand threaded, or are you asking it the tires are directional, as in tread.


Westfolk, is the nut behind the steering wheel, left or right handed?

he he, we were all nooby's once, a simple rule followed around here...my shop and the local guard unit, is with the lug wrench handle up always pull towards the back of the truck no matter what side U are on, even seasoned veterans can forget this now and again...but some day u will look back and laugh....there is just so much to learn about these trucks, this is the best site by far out there, start reading old threads, u are only at the begining...:-D

I had a member explain the entire process of changing out the wheel cylinders but forgot to tell me that 1 little nugget. Fortuntely he caught me before I started snapping off lugs!

Good on you for asking . . . . . I learned the hard, er, frustrating way. On the other hand a stud shearing at the end of a 6 foot long breaker bar makes an extraordinarily unique sound. . . . .

Mine had a R and an L on the front wheel studs and an RH an LH on the rear studs. However with the 6 layers of paint that my truck has I couldn't read it until after I got the nuts off and cleaned them up a little.

i didnt know if it really was left handed threads after jumping on the 5 foot long bar the lug nuts finally loosened today

Guess it depends on who/how it was assembled the last time it was apart! I had the rear axles with LH and RH on the same side and the 105 was swapped left to right. Makes for a confusing time removing things for the first itme

I've had a couple of run-ins like that, too.

An old-timer once told me it was a way to keep the nuts from loosening during use. Don't know if it's true or not, or how it works.
Some old cars had the same setup, like my dad's old '51 studebaker.

It's true cause the way the wheels spin on the left side. On the rear the lugs sit flat on the wheel and would spin off.

For me, I know the left side is left hand thread but it never fails on that first lug nut on the left side. I thighten the crap out of it until the lightbulb comes on. "Okay dummy, it's a left hand thread". Everytime!:oops::oops::-D

My truck was confusing at first too, a little left on the wrong side:roll: I might get around to putting it back to factory someday, but as long as I know about it and no one else has to work on it I'll be fine.

I was just a young PFC trying to change a tire in the Motorpool one day, struggling with a lug wrench on the left side of my Deuce. After watching me jump up and down on the lug wrench for a few minutes, the Motor Sargeant came by and whispered in my ear, "it'll come off of there alot easier if you jump on it the other way". :oops::roll: Never forgot that.
