AM General to offer civilian HMMWV "kit car"

The armor world has been changing so fast in recent years to keep pace with the executive abduction industry, I would wonder if it wouldn't be lighter and maybe even cheaper to use modern civi armor rather than trying to find or copy 10 year old .mil armor kits.

Just curious considering the folks around here who are in the know on these.

Not sure if it will even be an issue now, since it's looking like AMG isn't doing it, but I just got confirmation from the EPA..... I am inserting the email reply below....

2. An assembled kit car or complete kit car package which meets the following guidelines will be considered to be a rebuilt vehicle of a previously certified configuration and will be considered to be covered by that configuration's original EPA certificate of conformity.

So if you install and engine and related emission components from a U.S. certified vehicle into the HMMWV-C Kit, then the "Rebuilt Vehicle" would fall under that vehicles certification. So if you use the engine and emission components from a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado then it would fall under that vehicles certification as long as you used all related equipment as described in the Kit Car Policy.

Mr. Hurlin,

I have read the guidance and I am confused about a possible grey are here. Essentially what I am asking is, since AM General is producing a kit made up of components that were last used in Military production, under a military EPA Waiver, would the emissions cert requirements for the assembled "Motor Vehicle" be based against the kit contents, or the used drive train I supply, as the driveline components were the only commercially produced/sold components?

So do u know whats the deal on hmmwv on the road cuz, wanna build one but i dont wanna get stuck with this hmmwv if i cant drive on the road
Check you state laws on kit cars. If you buy a kit car and assemble it, there should be a process for getting it inspected, titled, and registered.

Kit car registrations are different process from buying a surplus Humvee from gov auction. If you want one from gov auction, be aware they come marked as "off road use only". Also read the post on titling your Humvee. A link was posted in this thread.

Admittedly the gentleman in post No. 48 above did manage a rather minor faux pas, but the question here is, as AM General sent an aforementioned letter to the state DMV's telling them that the HMMWV's did not met Federal Highway Safety regulations and that they should thus not be licensed, how do you figure AM General's going to get around that little issue?

Unless the drivetrain and builder plates are off the exempted old USMC tenor HMMWV's, I suspect there is going to be an issue crop up in the DMV department. Besides, for the money that they want, a solid used Unimog U1300L is a much better vehicle on and off road (IMHOP). Let's see where these chickens roost!:whistle:
