M916 Radiator Cap

Another part not easy to find in the TM's is the radiator cap.
Currently it is believed a 10 lb cap is required, specifically
a Stant #10237 10 lb cap.

I have never seen any of these year 1 accessory's installed
in an M916 that you call "ashtray " ........?

Might yee have pictures of said?

I saw a picture yesterday on here looking for CPL info, but I can't find it now, of course. :shrugs:

Its just an ashtray that sits below the window crank on each door. I think perhaps they were mostly eliminated during rebuilds of these trucks. I've definitely seen more trucks without them than with.

I have known for a while my front driveshaft needed service.
You could feel the slightest of vibrations at freeway speeds and if
you physically yanked on it you can feel/see just a wee bit of play.
There was the smallest of play between the male and female telescoping splines.

I found the female yoke end on Ebay for some crazy cheap money
months ago. Last week I took it and the driveshaft to Powertrain Industries
in Whitter, CA and they supplied and installed a new male 16 spline end
and took my female end and my U-Joints and balanced it all for $320.00.

I gave them some 383 green and they used that. Came out sweet.
I mention this because he told me he gets a lot of Military driveshafts
to restore, and they do a lot of Shipping and Receiving of driveshafts
from all over the country. It is a pro outfit, prices are right, quality work.
I also mention this because it was a biotch to find a driveshaft repair
company that would even look at large truck parts. If you use them tell
Adrian "Artisan" the plumber sent you.

PS, the front driveshaft on an M916 is 3.5" in diameter, NOT 4".

I saved the old male and female ends, they are good for a truck
used at low speeds for sure or someone who does not care.
I'll probably throw them on ebay. To buy them would be
about $600 I do believe.

My M916 is close to perfect now.

Someday I will find a straight front bumper for cheap and close.

Considering the Labor, that cost seems right reasonable for what you got done. Did you think so?

Relays and Circuit Breakers

Only God, myself (and maybe my wife :clinto:) knows how ignorant I am
on some subjects. Electricity makes my blood run cold for I am so uneducated
in it and its ways...

Having said that I recently had some issues w/ my 1990 Ford F250 and I was
able to nail down my electrical gremlin to a RELAY.

Now back to MV's.

I started thinking about the 7-8 relays we have in the M915 series of trucks
and I went looking, just so I could find, and buy spares. Here is the deal.
The M916, M915 and M920 trucks use a TM P/N of 0332-204-101. I was
able to cross that over to an "RE2624" as found HERE. I punched RE 2624
into Oreillys Auto parts and I did not get an exact match but I did get this
referral.
(NOTE: READ ON TO NEXT PAGE, I ADDED NOTES)
If anyone has any input, and/or a place to by these much cheaper, please sound off.

THE BELOW IS FROM TM -20
a.The electrical relays are identical in all M915 thru M920 vehicles, except for minor
variations in arrangement. The M917, M918, and M919 use two relays, the M915
use seven relays; while the M916 and M920 use eight.

b.The circuit breakers are identical in the M915 thru M920 vehicles, except for minor
variations in arrangement. The M917, M918, and M919 use six circuit breakers to
protect their electrical systems, the M915 uses eight; while the M916 and M920 use
nine. These circuit breakers are rated at 20 amps continuous load. If an overload
does occur, the circuit breaker automatically recycles (opens and closes) until the
overload is removed.

Yea, I see these things all over the place, hopefully EriksMilitarySurplus w
that is the first place I go to when I need 5 ton and more parts, hopefully he will
see this thread and grab this bull by its horns and get this stuff
listed on his site for us guys that drive the bigger toys. Even if it is a few
more bucks I would prefer to support the vendors that support us.
THAT is a no brainer.

M916 Relay and Circuit Breaker Cheet Sheet

Here is a good cheat sheet I made and printed out to put
in my truck. It could be VERY helpful on the side of a road.
I dropped all info that was not M916 specific.

See -20 TM starting on page 2-33 for more info .

Image is too big (it fits on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper...) for
this forum tis why there is just a link.

If anyone has any suggestions, please suggest away.

M916 5 Blade Relay Testing

I am still playing w/ relays. The M916 has I think 8 of
these mechanical switches, better know them in and out.

I made a drawing that I will carry in case I am away
from computers and need to diagnosis because I c-r-s.

Big Cam I or Big Cam III ?

What do I have, a Big Cam I or Big Cam III ?

That is the question...


Or do I have a Big Cam I block, w/ Big Cam III Turbo components ?

On PDF pg 560 of TM-9-2815-225-34-&-P it shows the difference
between a Big Cam I and Big Cam III exhaust manifolds.

My exhaust manifold is clearly of the Big Cam III Variety, (there
is also a Big Cam III "new design" w/ spacer inserts of which
I believe you can not tell until you disassemble
),
in the same TM, on PDF pg 24, is says a Big Cam I has the
Aluminum Oil Pan. Well, my truck has the aluminum oil pan = Big Cam I


There is a sticker on the PS rear of the block that in part says;

On pdf pg 28 it says;
Turbocharger: Model T-50 (Big Cam I); Model T-46-B (Big Cam III) has a redesigned compressor
wheel, compressor housing, turbine wheel and shaft, bearing housing assembly, location of oil inlet line,
and V-bands.

If I take the number 3523415 on my Turbo's tag and punch it into Google, this web site;

...says I have the HT3B Turbo = Big Cam III

So the engine was rebuilt in 2007, " I guess" it makes sense
that the upgraded Turbo and Manifold would have been
swapped in at that time and all other components
left OE. So maybe I just answered my own Q.

As far as I know, another difference is the oil cooler. The BC3 has the two oil filters and the BC1 only has one on it.

I won't count my chickens before they are in my fold but
a couple days ago I won a spare Transfer Case for my M916
on GL. 1989 vintage, I believe it to be NOS, not a rebuild.

SO I will have 2- NOS Rebuilt Trannies and 1- NOS TC in
stock "just in case" , after that many items are COTS .

I will breathe a LOT easier once I have that, plus the resale
value goes thru the roof w/ those spare parts IN HAND. :)

...and I think there was a typographical listing error as well.
I say their gonna fit my M916. If I am wrong
