BACKGROUND
So I am taking my Dexter, 12K Axle, Disc Brakes apart
and glass bead blasting away rust, and replacing the grease.
The brakes have all new parts still, trailer used one time, it was
flooded by the Mississippi we suspect. I pulled the one inner hub seal
and it came out looking brand new. It does NOT say you
HAVE to replace seals every time, it says to look for cracks, cuts etc
and these look perfect. I still may buy new seals but that is not my question.

If you read Dexters instructions ( 9-15K_Complete_Service_Manual-1.pdf )
on Pg 39, #2, it says, and I quote;
"Coat the O.D. of a new seal with a bore sealant (Permatex or equivalent) prior to installation."

I can't seem to find any Permatex product called BORE SEALANT for the life of me!

Is it is typo or am I a complete idiot or what?

Coffey thank u for the reply, really, I appreciate it.

ButSomeHowEver:

The book says there is a Permatex brand name resolve for this and I would love to see
exactly what the Permatex product is specicly. I kinda trust Permatex products, other
brands, not so much. Indeed the instructions say Permatex "or equivalent" ,
I would rather stay w/ a PERMATEX brand product so I seek;

PERMATEX BORE SEALANT !

Anyone know a part number for PERMATEX BORE SEALANT?

Could not find in permatex
All of the I saw were made with silicone and it needs to be a acrylic base.

I can't find it in Permatex either but the company that says it exists is DEXTER Axle Co.

I guess I get to call them and run their gauntlet. Just seems wrong.

I have the PDF file and I just uploaded it to my server, CLICK HERE Go to page
32 I think it was and them item #2 gives you this verbatim;

"Coat the O.D. of a new seal with a bore sealant (Permatex or equivalent) prior to installation."

I think you are being too literal, I think they were calling it out just to make sure seal stayed where it was supposed to and nothing got by on the outside. Regular Permatex would seal any small gaps around the OD of the seal and hence function as a bore sealant.

They didn't say Permatex Bore Sealant (or equivalent), they said bore sealant-(no caps on bore or sealant to me means generic)

It isn't like you have a spun race kind of situation where you would use a Permatex or Locktite product called "bearing mount"

034.jpg035.jpg036.jpgThis is the stuff I have used for years to help seal oil seals in there bores. I'm sorry the bottle is hard to read, it is Aviation sealant, and the part number is "3H" . It is made by Permatex. Remember to just use a little bit on the outside of the metal seal and don't get any on the rubber seal.

Arrrgh!

On Pg 62 of same manual #2 it says;
2. Apply a sealant similar to PERMATEX
® High-Temp Red

RTV Silicone Gasket to the outside of the seal. Use only

enough to provide a thin coat to prevent any excess from

contaminating the rubber lip(s) of the seal. It is okay to apply

a slight amount of lube to the inner rubber lip(s) to aid with

installing onto the spindle.

Note:
No sealant should be used if the outside of the seal is

rubber coated. For these type of seals it is recommended to

apply a thin coat of oil to the outside rubber.

I found my awnser, THANK you gentlemen. My seals have rubber edges.
