Bjorn, I'm pretty sure you just hit the nail on the head. I've read (somewhere) that the purpose of the gov't switching to the silicone is exactly that. Vehicles in administrative storage needed to have brake systems rebuilt before use. Heaven knows that your and my deuce gets its fair share of miles and not just local either!

I might be wrong, but it's my understanding that DOT 3 holds moisture?

It will draw it and hold it. It's the main problem with DOT3 and probably the best reason for switching to DOT5, but DOT5 will also take a lot more heat than the DOT3.
