In the automatics you can force a downshift, but not an upshift.

The truck pictured has a Spicer 5spd, however.
Forcing a downshift is good w/in reason to save the brakes or keep them cool enough to work well. In regards to upshifting if the gear selector in the automatic (Allison for example) is in 1 and you nail the throttle and hold it to the floor until the engine explodes (hypothetically speaking), will the auto upshift?

You'll be up against the Rev limiter anyway...

The rev limiter can be adjusted. The NHC250 motor in my m816 wrecker can turn 2500 rpm and keep climbing while in gear. It's supposed to be limited to 2100-2300 rpm.
