finally got my EUC cleared and picked up my latest parts truck (plans unknown at this point) This truck has the older body on it, the welder and generator, but is on a M1008, not a M1028. BTW, Mike at GL in Mechanicsburg loaded this thing on my trailer, with out any further damage, in a very professional way. Great guy.

Not all are M1031's. Mine is an M1028A1 with the older box (taller front cabinets) like shown above. I believe all or most M1031's have the newer style box with the shorter front cabinets.

When units couldn't get the M1031 contact trucks, they took the maintenance body off of the old dodge M880's and put them usually on M1028's . On an M1008 sounds like a rared thing from what I have seen.

The maint body is aluminum so with the compressor and generator I'd guess at no more than 7500 to 8000lbs. The chassis and cab is only about 5200lbs.

The M1028A1 is a converted M1031 (at least every one I've seen), so it's really the same.

The Dodge body didn't require the PTO (driven by the NP-205 of the M1031), so you could really put it on anything, including an M1008, but as JohnFire said, mostly they seem to have been put on M1028's.

If your fixing it, it looks like you've got your work cut out for you. If its a parts tuck, then thats a good one. Does it have a drivetrain?
I see a 72 too. Any pics of that?

Not mine. I have the original M1028 data plate (6/86) and the data plate showing the conversion (sometime in 92) to an M1028A1. Additionaly, the chassis wiring is the typical M1008/M1028 wiring which is slightly different on the M1031
I have the NP205 but no PTO. Its the old style body and had the gasoline engine driven generator in it, although I was not lucky enough to get it with the truck.

Interesting... What is the NSN on your Mfr. data plate? What about the GVW and curb weights? How about the 3rd character of the VIN? Anything is possible and I can see them doing it if they didn't have any M1031's available, but what's the point of just swapping t-cases and driveshafts if they're not using the PTO capability? I can see creating pickups from cab/chassis trucks because they are more useful.

Yours would be the first one I've ever heard of that was done this way. Not that I'm an expert, but I have been paying attention to those sort of details since the late 90's, so it is intriguing to me.

You're correct about the M1031, the NSN is 2320-01-133-5368 on the original (as far as I know) data plate, manufactured in 6/86. The modification data plate says M1028A1 NSN 2320-01-158-0820 TMO1 Shelter Carrier modified by TEAD in 7/92. It has the 4940-01-016-2262 SECM box on it. The vin is 1GBHD34J3GF.
Question I have then is why would they (yes, I know it's the Government) take an M1031 and change it to an M1028A1 if they needed M1031's so bad?
As far as the driveshaft, what is the difference between the two trucks?
I tried to include pics of the data plates but my computer is timing out before they load.
Enlighten us all.

I ave a1031 Contact truck that came with all the toys and tools, I'll get a weight on it the first of the week and let you know.
Are there any conversion kits around I would love to have 6 tires.
