It looks like the snap ring on the axel is gone ,but remnants of the lockout remain. You may have to pry out on whats left of the lockout while taping the axel in , unless it welded itself to the axel . This may turn into chisel project to remove whats left of the lockout . other than the axel itself there is noyhing your going to hurt. But the remaineder of the lockout has to be removed to get at the wheel bearing nuts .
He's right Ni...

There is one gear left... although, it looks like part of one snap ring remains on the outside of the spline gear. My eyes aren't that good. You can also heat up the hub gear with a small torch, that would help, or you can beat it off...

Looks like you may need a new axle stub too.

Porky, what about using one of the small pulley type pullers? Hook it around the flange, and let the bolt center in the middle of the axle stub shaft?

It would be worth a shot with a gear puller . He may want to try taping the lockout remains back in a little to make all snap ring is gone . As toasted as that is I might even consider pulling the rotor if not already done and taking a cut -off wheel to the as far back as you can and get the tube off of everything stuck on the spindle and try driving it off from the back or then you coulld maybe get to the 6 spindle bolts going into the knuckle and pull yhe spindle axel and all .

Edit; you may want to tak the lockout off the other side to see how they are suppose to look and come out .

May I suggest that once your truck is back together and on the road you give the wife's friend a ride in it. She may like to know how it's supposed to perform.:-D

Yes I think the gear puller is a good choice not like you can hurt anything at this point! If not and you have air then a air hammer and split it only thing is try not to hurt the stub may still be OK! looks like if you can find a 3/4 ton with a 10 bolt your 8 lug swap is looking great at this point! will give you all you need for the bolt on swap!

The hub and rotor come off together , you have to get the part you where pointing at with the punch first . Then behind that is the wheel bearning nut that tale the special tool .
As i said before you may want to take the lockout off the other side to see what a undamaged onr looks like, your going to have service that side before putting it back on the road safely any how.

Do yourself a favor, get some brake clean and clean out the grease so you can see what you are dealing with, get a good picture of the axle spline. To me, it looked like the the splines were all buggered up, making it difficult to get the rest of the lockout gear off. You are going to need more then a pair of pliers if the shaft is buggered up. If they are buggered up, get behind the hub at the u-joint, and push the axle out as far as you can, then knock the lockout gear in as far as you can. Use a file or something to fix the axle splines.

I just tried a tip someone gave me on here and had my wife hold the gear with my pry bar while I tried to punch the splined shaft back without damaging. Won't budge one way or the other.

I didn't have any time to mess with it really today as I had to work and then got home after a dinner even I had to go to. I think I'm going to try and attack this thing with a file and see if I can split the top without damaging the splines. Seems like I read that somewhere back further in the thread. Sound feasible?

Edit to add. I'm going to call O'Reilly tomorrow and see if they can rent me that hub puller.

Hub puller first. That will do it or crack the hub gear in half if you get a good enough hold. :)

I think you should go over to the other side and take off the good hub. You can see then how it is put together. Your going to do the brakes and grease that side anyway so do it first.
Second I would put your 14 bolt under there and then look for another front with the same gearing as the 14 boltSF. Suburbans had them. Then you can have 16" wheels and the improved gearing for off road use. I would not spend any money replacing the busted hub.

I've taken the cover off that hub and looked at it but have not rebuilt it yet as I'm waiting on my new lockouts to arrive. I see the snap ring that it has but looking at it and then looking at the messed up side make me think the snap right over the spline shaft broke off and got chewed up somewhere along the way.

So right now I'm trying to fiddle with this so at least I'll be that far ahead when it arrives. I'm looking at one of these as it looks like it will fit and could probably get the job done.

Amazon.com: GEAR PULLER -- 3" -- 3-JAW: Automotive

I'm trying to source it locally in hopes that I can look at it and make sure it will fit before I got and buy it.

I hope that when I get done with this I can assimilate all the videos and images into a single post so that future owners can just do a search and find it all in one concise post.
