Deuce tranny fluid change

I have been searching the TM's for literally three hours and searched SS as well but need some help.

I need to change the tranny fluid in one of my deuces which was topless for years. She spits steam so I'm confident it's got some water.

I cannot find a TM that explains the process. I find TM's that break the transmission down piece by piece and I can pretty much rebuild one, the lo TM shows me the drain plug and filler plug as well as the oil to use and capacity, the maintenance TM's show me how to check the transmission housing, but no TM to describe the process of actually changing the fluid. Does the process exist in a TM? If not, is it as simple as remove the drain plug, drain fluid, replace drain plug, remove filler plug, fill to one knuckle length of index finger, replace filler plug?

Are there any washers, gaskets or anything I need to replace? Any torque values I need to consider?

If the TM exists, please direct me to it. I'd also like to know how to change the fluid in the transfer case.

Drain out of the plug in the bottom on the back of the trans. Refill to smilar level with 30wt motor oil using the fill plug on the side.

You have it down 100%.

No, the drain and fill plugs are tapered, so the further you put them in, the tighter they get, removing the need for seals and gaskets. A torque value may exist, but I just tighten them to where they are snug. Better to have to go back and add half a turn than to get the plug stuck in the case.

I just put in Full syn 75/90 in my trans. I was going to go with the correct 30-50W motor oil but from the seal problem I went with a little thicker stuff.

You don't think that the thicker stuff will create more heat and cause it to expand which will in turn, push it out the front again?

Others have posted that Synthetic oil in the trans, can burn up the bushing for 2nd gear(I think thats the gear mentioned).

The trans manufacturer called for straight weight oil, the military used 90wt gl1 gear oil.

Whatever you chose, be sure it is "yellow metal safe"

The LO calls for 8.5 pints of oil for a trans with PTO.

I am going to try sae 30 Rotella T as per the gl-1 gear oil alternatives thread.

Ok third thread can't tell who is westech or doghead.

I used gear oil can't remember the weight 85/90 maybe it was GL 5 MT 1. Truck shifts great and even better when it's hot.

What ever oil you choose get a little hand pump because it imposible to pour it in with a bottle.

Yup, everyone has got ya covered. That's the right way to do it.

I spent a ton of cash on royal purple synthetic... Doesn't make much of a difference. Save your pennies! Read the other threads on types of trans lube.
