Did all the 4 speed hmmwv come with the 4L80

Did all the 4 speed hmmwv come with the 4L80?

What would be the difference between this 4L80 transmission, and once that would be in any car with the 4L80?

Yes the 4 speeds are 4L80 and not much different than any 4L80, some use different torque converters and different tail shaft configurations. And of course different programming in the TCMs

Not all 4L80's are created equal. There are early and late models and there were running updates. At some point they added a bolt hole for LS engines. Then the 4L85 is an upgrade planetary but still a bolt in for a 4L80. When I was looking for one for my HMMWV I found the 2000ish and up were a better choice and went with that. As for bolting it in, I also decided a take out HMMWV was a better choice than piecemealing it together since it already had the right lines, linkage, etc.

This was a pain since there were about a dozen different nsn's for HMMWV transmissions out there and each had its own TCM. Nowadays there are only 2 nsn's for the 4L80 transmission on HMMWV's. Legacy A2/R1 "heavy variant" like the 1097 and the up-armored HMMWV's like the 1151.

A2/R1:
Trans - 2520-01-489-0849
TCM - 2520-01-579-1379

Up-Armored:
Trans - 2520-01-489-0850
TCM - 2520-01-579-2302

As far as I know, the only difference in the different year TCMs is shift points. So you can just drop any one in and go.

Looks like that transmission PN 12563695 (2520-01-657-9861) came in a kit for the M1097A3 which I have not seen. I am not seeing much information on FEDLOG either. PN 57K6233 (2520-01-625-7876) is a replacement transmission to the 2001 year model which NSN is 2520-01-489-0850 (Terminal Item).

About what I found, no use on code for it. 1097 rebuilds in TX. 4L80e is one tuff box and the items to upgrade a 2000 and newer to 4L85e are available. THANKS

Never heard that one before.
Threw a few of us off when we replaced a transmission on an 1152. Couldn’t figure out why it was happening. TM wouldn’t explain it either. I believe PS Magazine had an article on it it.

A 4L80/85 will default to 2nd gear. It isn't so much a limp mode as a default. I found this out when doing my 4L80 swap and talking to the TCM controller tech support to make sure I was setting it up correctly. It displayed 2nd upon power up and that didn't seem right to me so I called. After a discussion with a very knowledgeable tech at the company he explained many aspects of how it works and this was one of my question.

I suspect the Limp mode is basically any aspect of the controller not working such as a sensor or power and the transmission defaults back to 2nd gear as opposed to the controller saying "hay something is wrong, lets go to 2nd gear so I can be limped home".

Any number of things can put you in the limp mode from a bad sensor or wire to no power to the TCM, you can pull every electronic device and wire and it will be in 2nd gear all the time it is in drive.

I would consider upgrading to a newer TCM. When my TCM failed due to water in the waterproof box I decided to go with the transmission kit from Black Dog Customs. This way you are using a modern controller instead of the older box. I have put over 6,000 miles on mine since I installed it and the install is pretty simple and straightforward. It took a couple hours for the install.

There is an early and late 4L80E...most hmmwv's have the late one.
Tcm's if good will all work...its just different shift times.

Go with the black dog stand-alone kit, better with tuning on the fly, better diagnostics, shift point adjustments, allllll kinds of goodies. I just installed one on a buddies truck, why spend 800 on a “new” TCM when you can go brand new with a warranty and has upgrades etc for a few dollars more?IMG_0915.jpg
