Driving with a blown cyl head gasket?

I would agree the Bars stop leak does work well. Could always start the truck and see for yourself, if it starts overheating idling, if not you could possibly drive it, but you risk doing more damage with no indicators until it's to late. If he is not far, see if you can fix it there, I just hope you find the best alternative that keeps the truck from blowing the motor and yourself safe from potential hazards on and off the road. Wish I was closer, I would try to help.

Why couldnt you remove the injector, plug that injector line and let it run like that? Removing the injector would prevent the cylinder from firing and would prevent any coolant from building up in there busting the head/ piston/ other expensive parts. Just keep check on the temp as you go along.

You could remove the injector to kill the cylinder from firing, but don't plug the IP line it will dead head the pump. Instead put a hose on the end of the line and run it to a container or the tank. If it is cyl 6 you can plug the return line as the fuel exits the #1 cyl. Good luck.

Thanks for the advise. My plan is to go out and do some more checking. I am going with the intentions of checking for hydro lock then fire it up to determine for sure the extent of damage and go from there. I checked on getting it towed and it's bad but not impossible as a last resort. Now if I could only get a few minutes to get it done...at least the guy isn't in a huge hurry to get it out of his way!

I know its been awhile with no updates but hopefully I'll have pics in two weeks. Title has been released and should be here soon... Got shipping confirmation on the feet for the tow bar, the recovery duece is fueled and ready along with an escort/tail vehicle.

Anybody use the older tow bar feet? Ie the style with 3/4 and one inch holes on one side? I have only been able to get one of the correct 1in/1in feet but found a pair of the dual hole style.

Thanks, mike

Did a poor job describing what I got as that's where they are coming from and currently he doesn't have the 1in/1in feet. What he had are described and pictured as "old style medium tow bar ends"
they have a 1in bar end, on the other end they have both the 3/4in hole and a 1in hole. Will these not work?

thanks, mike

You need the ones with one inch holes. Look on e-bay for beltfed34, he usually has loads of items, including tow bar feet.
lol...thought I had found something... These were listed as fitting the medium towbar but must not be. What are these made to fit? Guess I'm back to needing one more foot to complete my 1in set.

Those are for the not-adjustable tow bar that uses 1 and 1/8th inch pins. The feet will fit the truck but not the tow bar. I guess you could put a bushing in the hole, but you will also have to mill the foot in order to fit in the med adjustable tow bar.

That is what I may have to do if I can't come up with the correct on in the next week or so. The bushing is no problem but the mill job might be more than my equipment will do. But on the other hand it would be nice to have both feet sizes in one....

It's home, safe and sound... I think!

Things i learned, towbars are nice but there is something about 395's, this truck and being towed. It would not track straight for anything, it took one in the driver seat to hold course and make it turn the corners. It really seemed like the tires may have needed to be overinflated to keep the side walls from flexing... I don't know.
Didn't know you could squeeze 395's on what appear to be factory duece wheels...and last but not least...I don't have green fever... my wife said I was getting it bad, told her nope...this ones blue. LOL!

Only trouble is I developed a small fuel leak on my truck. Didn't have time to look for it before it started raining but appears to be coming from the line feeding the secondary filters.

Yeah, I used stock rims before I got my re-centered Hemtt rims. They suck to break down if you get a flat. I have NEVER had a deuce with radial tires tow well, just the trucks with NDTs. Glad to see she is home safe.

Glad I didn't buy that blue beast for what the guy was asking when I looked at it. For what you gave on it, it will be nice to have as a parts vehicle.

Let me know when you decide to tackle fixing the motor. I can point you in the direction of the best sources for parts I've found. I'm getting ready to do the headgaskets on mine too.

Yea, ia tractor, if we was asking what you paid for yours it was WAY to much! I'm fairly happy, he threw on all the parts he had, new style head gaskets, a few sets of lights, cargo cover, gun mounts and a few ore odds and ends. Now to see how much it's going to take to make it run... Hope to hear and see what exactly is wrong sometime this week, then I can decide what to do with it.

After seeing the pics of the single, centered, rear axle truck this may happen to this one if it runs and drives good. It would be nice to have a truck to just play with, mabey even pull occasionally.

mike

forgot to add IA, I think I said something about the Quincy Veterans Day parade on nov 9th, we are for sure going. I know it's a haul for you, but the more the better. Also the VFW is going to add lights and a tree to mine for the Burlington Christmas parade on nov 30th.... I'm sure they could come up with more lights for yours!

100% the head gasket, you can hear it cranking and you can feel the hd gasket dislodged behind #6 cyl. I probably should have went ahead and let it have fuel just to see if it would smoke but my hand just couldn't push in the fuel stop... work to commence after duck wacking on Saturday.

Here's the damage. Still scratching my head on this one. The gasket appears to be good around the coolant ports but I had about a quart of coolant in the intake when I pulled it. It appeared to be isolated to #5 & 6cyls. No antifreeze in the cyls so I assume it migrated its way past the rings and into the pan from sitting. The good news is I rolled it over by hand and the cyls look good, don't see any cracks or pits so hopefully it will have a heartbeat again soon.

The machine shop hasn't found any cracks or damage other than .002-.003 out of flat on the rear head. Anyone see one blow like this or ideas?

Thanks, Mike.
