Just got a 1986 1038. Seems disclaimer sticker on valve cover says 1998? Does this mean engine has been changed? Taken out of service in 2015

I have never seen that sticker, certainly not the "usual" one for sure, take a picture of the back of the engine with the doghouse removed, you may have a 6.5L

pretty much every HMMWV ends up going through a reset/rebuild at some point.
They have a large amount of money to spend bringing the truck back to reset condition, and even if it doesn't need anything they still do all of the major wear items like engine and transmission.

I'd be a lot more surprised to find the original engine from 1986 than finding one from 1998.

We get those stickers a lot in the marine industry. We're installing exempt tier 3 engines in our fleet right now. This sticker is the real deal. You have a 1998 engine. I can't tell you what engine you have.
