FMTV vs International Navistar Family

I'm not too familiar with the International Navistar family of offroad trucks other than them being the basis of a few MRAPs. I just realized there are wrecker and cargo variants. Why are these a thing when the FMTV exists? How do they compare to the FMTV and older trucks the FMTV replaced?

Has a lot to do with both George Bush and Stewart and Stevenson being from Texas and Navistar isn’t.

The Navistar MaxxPro line was mostly armored cabs & aimed at export market.

And it’s telling that Oshkosh’s MTVR line is the favored choice over FMTV at least for Navy & Marine Corps

I'm not sure but weren't those made at the Garland Texas plant?

I know that their main op is in Chicago (which also btw ....moving to Texas) but I thought the MTVR stuff was done in Garland.

Is engine power the main advantage of the Navistar trucks? Last I knew they used 300+ HP commercial truck diesels, a little more oomph than the Cats in the FMTV.

Canada may have wished for that truck and maybe even wrote the spec.....sorry. I don't hear a lot of good things about the Internationals up here. It's been a decade so let's hope they have the bugs worked out. The military process just keeps fixin' things until we get it right....or spend a ton of money then just walk away. The $274 Million contract was awarded to Navistar Defence LLC following a competitive procurement process. Canada will take delivery of the first trucks in the summer of 2009, with all the trucks to be delivered within 18 months after the contract award.

I like em' for all the highway, hauling, big cab, radio, heater, soft seats, slightly offroad on flat/hard ground capability, family haulin', camping/fishing fun.



They say there's lots of power so what more could you ask from a steel soldier.

These trucks seem like a no-brainer to procure - civilian comforts and military capabilities. I know the FMTV is more comfortable than the trucks before it, but I think I'd rather get one of the Internationals.

I saw a video of a Navistar wrecker recovering a buried MRAP. Are the Navistar wreckers standardized in the DoD with an M number? I haven't been able to find one.

ever off road in a navi?
With that huge probiscus blocking your trail views, and the limp noodle frame.. I wasnt impressed.
Next time you see a civilian 6x6/4x4 utility truck or railway truck etc, crawl under it and take a close look.
Ive seen the Navy contracted navi, and it was set up just like the civvy version.
No - go for a build for me.
