Those are some nice looking power-paks you have Dave. Is the Gray one going into "Piglet" ?

Piglet gets the shiny motor after a little more clean up. Started doing some firewall prep and Piglet turned disgusting. The oil bath was full of mice remnants. Clean up is going to take more than a Wagner steamer. Disgusting Piglet.

The Wagner steamer scrubbed until the water was clean, then a degrease, a steam, more degrease, wet scrub with scotch brite pads, degrease, wash, steam, degrease, wipe.....easy. Got it looking better than a pig pen and stuck the $20.00/ can engine paint on a clean surface.

Still need to bolt parts back on and pick a fan color. The bar is set pretty high with a local deuce done in detail.

Disgusting Piglet gave me a startle. What bird faced creature did we find here? Did not expect a gaping mouth to be looking back when I finally stuck my face in there.

The air breather was full of seeds and mouse torpedos so when I stuck my head against the firewall to look in Piglets hole, I did not expect to see a hole in a hole. Sure looks like a bird waiting for grub.

The removal of the air / oil bath, air intake, canister, rerouter into cab, optional fording cap.....the thing that filters air was removed. This is what it looks like down the tube of a mouse hole. This is a 2 soldier task with 9 bolts between 1/2" and 9/16" keeping it on the firewall. Two passenger side bracket bolts hide behind the canister and frame so it's a tight spot. Pressure washing before removal is suggested. Piglet has two big ole, thick rubber seals over her hole going into the cab. Helps keep your mice dry.

This thing we're doing apparently involves finding dirt/oil/grease, removing it then cleaning a door. Looks better with the flash off. Looks different with the flash on.

For those of you wondering how I saved the nesting birds, turns out it was a peanut that had it's head bit off. Not so scary now is it tough guy?

Plowboy, that engine could stand alone in the room of an art gallery anywhere.

It's better looking than a number of "art" works I've run across over time...

I am still digging for details on contracts that went out for G749 service to see what kind of liberty and detail the workshops were given to replace engines. Many 'takeout' engines we found were just painted Grey including brackets and components. Even the "Grey" color is different between engines so checking out the procurement contracts could give us a range of options for some goal setting.

The detail in my buddies engine is absolutely insane and if they really looked like this coming out of factory or workshops, I have a lot of work to do. Some G749 fantasy drool photos.

In the great outdoors of Edmonton:

- WHERE in the name of Sam Hill do your figure that peanut came from, plowboy?!!
I want to know how they made it look like a bird. Being on a Pig farm, I'm thinking the boys liked to eat and left peanuts in the truck. Hard to say.

We do know Piglet the peanut protector didn't see it coming. Rented a 3500-4000 PSI pressure washer and Piglet got a bath. Possibly the first bath in decades.....disgusting Piglet.

Told a soldier B how fun it was using the big pressure washer and before I knew it, we had back-up. Some before and after on the number matching less disgusting but still hungry Piglet.

Fought with the Wagner sprayer to get it to stop globbing. Pretty sure I didn't thin the paint enough and it wasn't the sprayer. The paint can claims thinning is usually not required but it was thick in the can. I did thin however not down to the 5 drip stick dip trick. That's where you thin until around 5 drips come off your stick when you dip it in then pull it out. That was a fight to the finish.

Thanks Ahab, most of it looks amazing. The big flat area on the firewall where I started will need some 40 grit, 80 grit, 100 grit work but it's in an open area and can be touched up after the engine goes in. I hoped we'd get more 'self leveling' but the globs and the lack of 40/ 80/ 100 grit prep showed up today.
She's preserved but we can do better.

I watched both polyurethane, endura https://www.endurapaint.com/ and this product go as low as 3 drips which is almost as thin as water. The painting doctor I learned from could lay a finish coat smoother than a Si sphere from the Avogadro project. It's said the supplier will provide info on viscosity but right here on the can.......thinning not normally required. The paint is not fresh so we can't blame cloverdale. https://www.cloverdalepaint.com/ It also says on the can that it's good for the field so I'm wondering if I could green up the Canola a little before harvest? I guess we shouldn't take the instructions on the can literally.

The viscosity thang is a little more complex I assume however the dip trick is an observational success and just as effective as the cup counter.

Two questions have arisen that I'm hunting for data on for 302 Engine preservation.

What can we use that either replicates the old Oil Line Heat Wrap or is kinda sort of close but works like a tickety boo?

Since the ...mostly brass....oil/ water line fittings going back into the 302 are not new, should we put some teflon tape or other magic coating on the fittings to reduce leakage?

Nobody likes leakage.

The oil line heat wrap hunt is funky so let's poke around for options.

The governor lines run around the back of the engine and if we look close at disgusting Piglet's lines, we can see they are worn through to the air inside. Good time to inspect the governor lines fellas. Doesn't look like there's a lot of room back there and the wrap didn't stop the rubbin'.

We have spare lines and all they want is some cleaning, a new wrap and some fitting info to prevent that leakage we talked about. Piglet's donor engine has some routing issues and the technical manual will not let this pass.

Even those big lines down the side had some type of wrap. Getting close to authentic would be cool but Piglet's just trying to keep it real.

There is no shortage of help around the G749 farm. This little fella wanted us to show you the wrong Grey color and the Scotch Brite pads we use.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Crank Case Ventilation Line Assembly

We did some parts hunting through the take-out engines and was real surprised to find a 70 year old Crankcase Ventilation line dated June 1954. Happy 70th.

Went back to the G749 farm to find an August 1954 date on the Crank Vent Line on the engine from Fort Mac Mopar man. HAPPY BIRTHDAY twice. The other surprise is the 4000 PSI line used in 1954.

Saw this wee bird sitting on the neighbour's gate post on the way to the G749 farm and grabbed a quick pic while I was rolling up. Turned out he wanted to have a conversation so gave me time to grab a video and snap a bunch of pictures. Tells me they're packing up and heading South real soon.

The parts hunt went well. Mattech dug out a shiny wire harness, governor lines with fresh smelling heat cover on them still, grabbed the plumbing that we needed then poked under the valve cover of an engine outdoors for 40 years. Some things look good.

Got most of the parts back on disgusting Piglet's new Powerpak. Taking a wire harness of an original engine gave me all the mounting clips in their correct spots so this should look a lot like the manual when it's done. Used Thread Seal Tape on the water and oil lines that went back on and hope for a leak free reassembly. Nobody likes a leak.
