I think I have the mystery solved on the top box, at least partially. They have some mounts welded on that look like it had some kind of box over the tongue.

That's awesome, I'm jealous! I guess the extra section on top is some kind of roof rack so you can put more stuff up top and secure it with 550 cord or bungee cords or something. That's a nice little bonus.
