KY recovery question (temp tags?)

I'm picking up my Deuce at Boone a week from today. Everything works (brakes, all lights, etc). I'm driving it home, about 50 miles, maybe less.

The county clerk (Oldham) said I can't get temp tags or plates without a title or certificate of origin.

The sherrif said "tow it or gamble" on getting pulled over with no plates.

Anyone from KY with experience I could use here?

I gamble....they usually just wave, if they even look at me.
I asked my local sheriff and he said the judge would just throw it out of court if I had gotten tags or are attempting to get tags.
But I am in the Commonwealth of VA.

More info: I would of course have the paid invoice and proof of insurance with me.

I tried to get a temp tag for mine too. Scott Co said no way. They said the state is not allowed to give temp tags unless you are bringing a vehicle in from out of state.

good luck ,oldham clerk gives different answer every time. might check with state police post in campbellsburg. them or o.c. police dept maybe dot would probably be one to check you unless your running backroads.local dot man has own view of laws . good luck like to know how you work it out.could always say your taking it to courthouse for inspection to get tags

Can't speak for Kentucky but the tag office in GA said that my "bill of sale" (invoice) would grant me 30 days. Of course, like you are planning, I had my invoice and proof of insurance in the cab with me today on my recovery!!!!!!!!! Went well but plugged the primary fuel filter with water and killed the truck after 100 miles. Drained the filter (passenger side of frame about a foot back from radiator) bled the secondaries (13mm nut on driver's side of motor above and in between the filters) and fired back off and went the rest of the way. I'd say bring some gear oil as I lost my right side intermediate axle seal somewhere between mile 100 and 120 and it had a Class 3 leak when I got it home!!!

I was told today at the DMV a local officer would have to verify vin and that I needed to write the vin and year on my laid in full invoice. Then I would get my tag. So tomorrow I am going to schedule a zin inspection with the Cobb police. So it's sounds universal no truck no tags.

Joe so I guess your truck is still in Frankfort? Glad I had
mine hauled. Eric is still on the road guessing about a ten hour trip in a tracker trailer. Bad weather up there maybe?

I drove from Manachie Mississippi to Lansing Michigan 18+ hours on the road, through Indy and many other busy cities and nobody cared (except those caught behind me on the intersate, HeHe) saw more cops than i could count (and i went to college) if your nervous wear some camo like Blood said, or at least something dark W/ a dark ball cap. good luck with your truck!

Get this, in Missouri, I was told that I had to have a current inspection to get temporary tags. Uh, how in the f*** am I supposed to get an inspection if I can't "legally" drive it anywhere?

Okay, new question for KY members: the local county clerk told me today I need to take a form to the "seller" (GL in this case) and have them sign and NOTARIZE the form showing what I paid for the vehicle. Otherwise they're going to collect taxes on the retail value.

I kind of doubt I'll be able to get the GL rep to come to the bank with me to have it notarized. How did anyone else handle this?

As I understand it, having your invoice showing that you payed for the vehicle and proof of insurance should be enough on the off chance that you do get pulled over, but military vehicles wouldn't normally have any kind of identification other than their unit markings so I wouldn't expect to get pulled over anyway. And like some others have said, I didn't have any problems driving my truck nearly 500 miles through PA, MD, and cop ridden VA, to get it back to TN with no tags of any kind. I would just wing it, good luck with your truck!

I suggest asking the state police and jot down the name and the time and date of your conversation.
When you get teh SF-97 and other paperwork then go with the paperwork to the state police or local sherrif and get the VIN verification.
Then get it home, send the SF-97 request in to GL with all the stuff and then go to the DMV or OMV office.
The bill of sale will be notorized and it will have the purchase amount on it.
Explain to them that the buyers premium is not part of the actual sale price so they don't charge for it too.
Hint: The registration number (example: NF04J4) may be in the same line as the serial number but it is not actually part of the serial number of the truck. Example of an actual serial number: 0525-23669 (but leave the dash out when you request the SF-97).

That comes with your Title, it will have the purchase price on it and will be noterized, I understand what you going though i live in ky for 3 years , thank god i owned proportey in Oh that state is messed up with taxes and cars. So don't worry and be happy
