Losing coolant

Banshee365, Get the tester. It could be as simple as an upper radiator hose leaking past a clamp and running down the core. Maybe the cap is weak or missing all or part of the seal and, since the overflow pipe is out of the neck, coolant is running out of that and down the radiator. It would be a time saver if it were one of these problems and you DIDN'T need to take the radiator out.

After doing some research and using the search button, Im still confused on what type of coolant to refill my deuce with. Currently, it has the green stuff from the military in it.

Im going to flush, change ALL hoses, and refill.
NAPA has all sorts of coolant, regular, Heavy Duty, with SCA, without...

What do you guys suggest?

I only want to have to do this once, as it seems there are no relatevely clean fluid changes on a deuce. Dont ask me about the 5 gallons of oil that came GUSHING out of the block, backed up the funnel, and all over the floor......

Use Texaco's heavy duty coolant with distilled water (not tap) along with SCA's from Napa or FleetPride.

Thats what they make 5 gallon, open top buckets for. Ain't NO funnel going to work unless you can fit your fist through it.

As for coolant, use whatever you can find as long as it is labeled "For Heavy Duty Diesel Use" AND has SCAs (or buy the SCAs to go with it).

Here is the dumb thing about extended life coolants. GM has been using Dexcool for years. It's the orange stuff. If you have an air leak in the system, that junk will coagulate around the leak and start turning the whole cooling system into the biggest mess of sludge and what looks like rust. When you see it, you think uh oh, it's eating a hole thru the block. It's some kind of chemical breakdown that occurs when air mixes with it.

Use the heavy duty green stuff. And be sure to dilute it properly. Straight coolant can cause overheating problems too if not properly diluted. 50/50 mix of distilled water and coolant will do nicely.

The distilled water jug in the image above represents about 4 gallons for a 50/50 mix.....

If you can't easily drain the engine block (plugs too tight or whatever), fill the radiator with distilled water and run the engine with T-stat removed for circulation and mixing, then drain the radiator, refill with distilled water and repeat. Do this 4 times and there will be very little of the original coolant left in the mix (fun math problem to calculate).

If you don't want to remove the T-stat, run the engine until it opens and let coolant circulate for complete mixing. This can be spread out over a period of days actually.

The last radiator fill will be the glycol, water and DCA for a final 50/50 mix (plus additives). The radiator holds approx 5 gallons.
